Ask where the Bauhaus lamp came from and the honest answer is a classroom. The WG 24 was worked out in the metal workshop of a school that had just decided its business was designing for machines, and nearly every decision in the lamp can be traced back to what that workshop taught. This is the teaching, the geometry it produced, and what the number on a lamp assembled today actually records.
A school that had just changed its mind
The Bauhaus opened in Weimar in 1919 as a merger of an art academy and a school of applied arts, and in its first years the workshops still worked close to craft traditions. By 1923, when the school mounted its first large public exhibition, the declared direction had turned towards industry. Workshops were to develop prototypes a factory could take on, and teaching moved towards elementary form, the behaviour of materials, and construction that could be repeated without a master's hand in every piece.
The metal workshop, led at that stage by László Moholy-Nagy, largely left decorative silverwork behind and took up lighting. It was the one household object where a new technology and a new way of thinking about form met on equal terms: electric light needed a body, and nobody had settled what that body should look like. Wilhelm Wagenfeld trained in that workshop, and the design known today as the WG 24 Bauhaus Table Lamp belongs to his student years there. The numeral in the model name is a design designation, a way of saying which drawing this is, rather than a claim about how the lamp has been built in the century since.
Sphere, cylinder and disc
Read the WG 24 as three solids and the workshop teaching becomes visible. A disc: the clear glass base plate, 152 mm across. A cylinder: the glass shaft, which encloses the metal tube rather than covering it up. Half a sphere: the hemispherical opal glass shade on top. Nothing is applied to any of the three, and the nickel-plated metal parts stay exactly what they are, the fittings that hold the other parts together and carry the current.
The proportions are as plain as the parts. The lamp stands 360 mm high on a footprint of 180 by 180 mm, so its height is precisely twice its width, and it weighs 1.8 kg, a settled weight you notice when you lift it rather than nudge it. That reduction is the point of the exercise. A student asked to design for production could not rely on chasing, engraving or applied ornament, so the only variables left were the shapes themselves and how honestly they were joined.
The opal glass does the part of the work you actually see. It wraps the light source in a diffusing hemisphere, so what reaches the room is an even glow instead of a visible bulb. That is why the lamp reads as calm on a desk rather than bright, and why it became the everyday face of Bauhaus ideas instead of a display piece.

One problem, three answers
Wagenfeld treated the arrangement as a question to keep working on rather than a finished object. The WA 24 Bauhaus Table Lamp carries the same opal dome above a round glass base plate and glass shaft with nickel-plated metal parts, keeps the pull-cord switch where a hand expects to find it, and sits on a slightly broader base of 160 mm. The WG 25 GL Bauhaus Table Lamp, which he introduced the following year, extends the glass column so the silhouette stretches upward, with the cord running visibly inside the transparent shaft. Concealing nothing is the argument, and each version makes it slightly differently.

The shade is the constant: all three wear the same hemispherical opal dome, and all three occupy the same 180 by 360 by 180 mm envelope. What changes is how the light is carried up to it. What the number on a lamp records
Each WG 24 is consecutively numbered and carries both the Bauhaus and the TECNOLUMEN marks. The practice is a register rather than a flourish. The number places a single lamp in a running sequence, and the two marks state which design it follows and which workshop put it together, so the record stays on the object instead of in a folder that gets lost in a house move.
The workshop in question is in Bremen. TECNOLUMEN was founded there in 1979 by Walter Schnepel, whose first project was returning Wagenfeld's Bauhaus table lamp to production, and the lamps are still assembled by hand to the original drawings. That is the reason the family holds its dimensions so exactly across models: a base of Ø 152 mm and a height of 360 mm are drawn figures being followed, not approximations arrived at later.
It also explains the marking habit. A design that has been copied for a century needs some way of saying which drawing a given lamp was made from, and a stamped mark plus a serial number is the plainest available method. It is the same logic as the lamp itself: state the facts on the surface where anyone can read them.
Living with a lamp drawn for a small table
The footprint was set for the desks and bedside tables of the 1920s, and 180 mm square still fits where larger lamps will not: a narrow nightstand, a shelf beside a chair, the corner of a desk that is already too full. The 2.5 m cable gives enough slack to reach a skirting socket without crossing a walkway, and at 1.8 kg the lamp stays where you put it.
Two placement notes follow from the opal shade. Because the glass diffuses in every direction, the WG 24 lights the surface it stands on as well as the air around it, which makes it a good single source in a small room and a poor choice for anyone who wants light aimed at a page. And because so much of the body is glass, it looks best where something can be read through it: in front of a wall of books, against a window at dusk, on a sideboard with a little space cleared around it.
