Poul Henningsen designed the Snowball in 1958; shown alongside the PH 5, it was finally put into production in 1983. Its layered rings of shades — glossy on top, matte underneath — create a soft, completely glare-free glow that gives the fixture its luminous, snowball-like appearance.

1958 was the most remarkable year of Henningsen's late career — the year that gave the world the PH 5, the Artichoke, and the Snowball. While its two siblings went straight into production, the Snowball waited a quarter of a century: only in 1983, sixteen years after the designer's death, did Louis Poulsen bring it to market. The design distils Henningsen's logarithmic-spiral thinking into eight stacked shades whose surfaces are deliberately split — polished on top to bounce light between the layers, matte underneath to soften what reaches the eye. The result is a pendant that appears to glow from within its whole volume, like sunlight on packed snow.

The Snowball sits between the everyday PH 5 and the ceremonial Artichoke: more sculptural than the former, more approachable than the latter. It shines over a dining table or kitchen island, where its all-white layers freshen darker interiors and harmonise effortlessly with Scandinavian and Japandi palettes. In the compact apartments typical of Seoul, Tokyo, or Hong Kong, its concentrated, glare-free downlight makes it a practical main light for a combined living-dining zone.
