AJ Floor Lamp

Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Floor Lamp for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in 1957. Its white-painted inner shade casts a pleasant downward light and tilts to adjust the distribution. Part of the iconic AJ family — table, wall and floor lamps — it reflects Jacobsen's clean, geometric style and was integral to the hotel's architecture.

The SAS Royal Hotel was Jacobsen's total work of art: the Danish architect designed the building together with its furniture, textiles and lighting, down to the door handles. The AJ lamps share their angled, asymmetric profile with the Swan and Egg chairs born in the same project, and that tilted silhouette has since become one of the most recognisable shapes in Danish design. Louis Poulsen, the Copenhagen lighting house founded in 1874 and Jacobsen's manufacturing partner, has produced the family ever since.

In the home, the AJ Floor is the definitive reading lamp. Placed beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa, its shade drops focused, glare-free light exactly onto the page while the rest of the room stays calm — and a tilt of the head redirects the beam in seconds. The slim stem and low-profile foot slip neatly against seating, so it adds a strong graphic accent without eating floor space, a genuine advantage in the compact apartments typical of Asian cities. Angle the shade toward the wall in the evening and it becomes a soft indirect glow instead.
