AJ Table Lamp

Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Table Lamp for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in 1957 as part of a complete design concept. Its white-painted inner shade casts a pleasant downward light and tilts to adjust the distribution. Part of the iconic AJ family, crafted in steel, it embodies Jacobsen's clean, geometric style.

The SAS Royal Hotel was Jacobsen's total work of art: the Danish architect designed the building together with its furniture, textiles and lighting, down to the cutlery. The AJ Table originally stood in the hotel's guest rooms and lobby, its tilted, asymmetric shade echoing the leaning profiles of the Swan and Egg chairs created for the same interiors. That off-axis silhouette — balanced by the distinctive disc foot with its circular cut-out — has become one of the most recognisable shapes in Danish design, produced ever since by Louis Poulsen, the Copenhagen lighting house founded in 1874.

At home, the AJ Table is the rare task lamp that works as sculpture. On a desk it drops focused, glare-free light onto keyboard and paper; on a sideboard or hallway console it stands like a piece of graphic art; beside the bed its tilting shade angles light onto the page without waking a partner. The slim steel body keeps the footprint modest, welcome in the compact apartments typical of Asian cities, where one strong object often does more than several small ones — turn the shade toward the wall and the lamp shifts from task light to soft evening mood.
