Cirque Pendant

Cirque draws on the playful colours and forms of balloons, carousels and lights, rooted in Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens. Its colour transitions echo circular motion, often reading as continuous lines, while the silhouette nods to the iconic onion-shaped domes of Tivoli's buildings.

Cirque was designed in 2016 by Clara von Zweigbergk, a Stockholm-based graphic designer and art director whose work is defined by an unusually refined sense of colour. Before turning to lighting she worked for years in graphic design and paper craft, and that background shaped the lamp directly: the pendant began as a folded paper study in her studio, and when the model was set spinning, its coloured fields appeared to merge into unbroken rings. Louis Poulsen, the Danish lighting house with roots going back to 1874, translated that observation into a spun-aluminium shade whose painted bands wrap the form in seamless transitions — a rare case of a graphic designer's colour thinking applied straight to an industrial object.

In smaller homes and dense city apartments, Cirque is one of the easiest designer pendants to live with. Its modest footprint means you can hang a single piece low over a bedside table, a reading nook or a café-style corner table without crowding the room, while a row of two or three mixed sizes and colourways brings rhythm to a kitchen counter or dining bar. The downward-directed light makes it a natural choice above work surfaces, and the saturated exterior reads almost like a piece of graphic art when switched off — a welcome quality in compact Asian city flats where every object has to earn its place. Pair it with quieter furnishings and let the colour gradient be the focal point of the room.
