Doo-Wop Pendant

Originally introduced in the 1950s as the Navy Pendant — a collaboration between the Navy Buildings Department and Louis Poulsen — this fixture was widely used in canteens and offices for its distinctive light. Withdrawn in the early 1980s, it returned in 2012 as the Doo-Wop with new colours and a brass version, joined in 2017 by copper and stainless-steel editions. Its hand-spun shades with fine rolled edges give the pendant its signature optical volume.

The Doo-Wop's story is a small piece of Danish institutional history. In the post-war years, the Danish Navy's building department worked with Louis Poulsen to develop robust, glare-controlled fixtures for its facilities, and the resulting pendant lit naval canteens and offices for decades before quietly disappearing from the catalogue. When Louis Poulsen revived it, the lamp was renamed after the doo-wop vocal music of the same 1950s era — a nod to its mid-century roots. The double-shade construction is still made the traditional way: each shade is hand-spun, and the fine rolled edges between the two curves give the pendant the soft, layered silhouette that sets it apart from flat-pressed reproductions.

In today's homes, Doo-Wop reads as quiet mid-century authenticity rather than retro costume. Its compact diameter makes it one of the easiest Louis Poulsen pendants to use in smaller spaces: hang one low over a bedside table or kitchen counter, or line up two or three along a dining bar for a rhythm of warm metallic accents — the brass and copper versions develop a lovely glow in the evening. Because the shade directs light downward with good glare control, it also works well over a compact work desk in a studio apartment, where one fixture has to be both task light and decoration.
