Bon Wooden Tray Extra Small, Small or Large: which size fits?
All Bon trays are 36 cm wide: the 12 cm deep Extra Small holds candles, the 28 cm Small serves two, the 47 cm Large serves a group.
Short answer: All three Bon trays are 36 cm wide, so choose by depth. The 12 cm Extra Small is for candles or jars on a coffee table or by a basin, the 28 cm Small is the everyday tray for coffee for two, and the 47 cm Large is the one to carry a pot and cups for several people.
Same width, three depths
ferm LIVING builds the Bon tray at three scales from one design: low solid oak sides, visible corner joints, four small feet and a base of oak veneer over an MDF core with a polyacrylic coating. The wood is FSC Mix certified. The width never changes. Only the depth, the side height and the weight move.
| Extra Small | Small | Large | |
|---|---|---|---|
| W x H x D | 36 x 6 x 12 cm | 36 x 6 x 28 cm | 36 x 7 x 47 cm |
| Footprint | 432 cm² | 1,008 cm² | 1,692 cm² |
| Weight, empty | 0.5 kg | 1.0 kg | 1.5 kg |
| Share of a 60 cm deep coffee table | 20% | 47% | 78% |
| Choose it if | you want a line of objects, not a block | you want one tray that carries and also stays out | you serve several people, or want one tray to hold a whole arrangement |
The footprint row is the one to read. The Small has more than twice the surface of the Extra Small, and the Large has about two thirds more than the Small. Those are three different objects, not one tray in three sizes.
Measure the surface first
Our rule for a tray that lives on a table: keep its depth to about half the table's depth or less, so the rest stays free for cups, books and elbows. Applied to a 60 cm deep coffee table, the Small takes 47% and passes; the Large takes 78% and turns the tray into the tabletop. On a 90 cm deep dining table, the Large takes 52% and sits comfortably down the middle.
For a tray that only travels between kitchen and sofa, the rule does not apply; what matters is what it carries and what you can lift. The Large adds only 0.5 kg over the Small empty, but loaded with a pot and cups across 47 cm, it is the one you carry with both hands from the sides.

Where each size works
The Bon Wooden Tray Extra Small is a frame for small things. At 36 x 12 cm it reads as a strip, so it fits places a deeper tray cannot: a windowsill, a narrow shelf, the back of a desk, the ledge behind a basin. ferm LIVING suggests a row of candles in a living room or jars in a bathroom, and both suit its proportions. It does not carry a mug and a plate side by side; that is not its job.

The Bon Wooden Tray Small is the most flexible. At 28 cm deep it takes two mugs and a small plate, which is why it is pitched for morning coffee and afternoon drinks. It is also compact enough to leave out on a counter, a sideboard or an ottoman between uses.
The Bon Wooden Tray Large is the serving tray. The 47 cm depth and slightly taller 7 cm sides give room for a pot, several cups and something to eat, and it is described as generous enough for coffee or drinks for a small group. On a dining table it can also hold candles, a vase and a bowl as one setting that lifts off in one go when you need the space.
Finishes, nesting and the box
Each size comes in Oak, Smoked Oak and Black Painted Oak, so you can mix sizes and keep one colour. Oak shows the grain most clearly; Smoked Oak is a warmer brown that sits well with walnut or dark stone; Black Painted Oak turns the tray into a graphic outline on a pale surface, with the corner joints showing as fine lines.
The fixed width also helps when the trays are put away. Two or three sizes take the same 36 cm slot on a shelf, and a second size bought later lines up with the first along that edge.

If you like the joinery, the Bon Wooden Box – Oiled Oak carries it into a lidded form: 35 x 19 x 19 cm, 2.8 kg, lid, sides and feet in solid oak. It is made for bread, onions and other kitchen staples, and the solid lid doubles as a cutting board. At 35 cm wide it lines up almost exactly with the 36 cm edge of any Bon tray on a counter.
Which one we would choose
If you buy one tray: the Small. It is the only size that both carries a real load and stays out on a counter or ottoman without taking over, and it passes our half-depth rule on a 60 cm coffee table.
For a coffee table you also use for books and cups: the Extra Small, set along the back edge with candles or a plant on it. It orders the objects and leaves 48 cm of a 60 cm table free.
For serving four or more, or for a dining table centrepiece: the Large. It is the only size with room for a pot and several cups at once.
For a pair: Extra Small on the coffee table and Large in the kitchen, in the same finish. They do different jobs and still match along their 36 cm edge. See the rest of the range in our serveware collection.
