The Pantop Portable is a cordless take on Verner Panton's classic 1980 design, keeping the signature bell-shaped shade. Easy to move from room to room, it offers up to seven hours of light per charge, with a three-stage dimmer to suit any mood.
Verner Panton (1926–1998) designed the original Pantop in 1980, late in a career that had already reshaped what Danish design could be, from the moulded Panton Chair to the radical colour-saturated interiors of his Visiona exhibitions. The Pantop marked a return to essential forms: a bell-like shade, flared wide and mounted aperture-down, with colour carrying the expressive weight. Panton believed colour was a functional part of design, not an afterthought, and the Pantop's bold palette reflects that conviction. The portable edition, produced by VERPAN, the Danish company founded in 2003 to manufacture Panton's work to his original drawings, translates the design into a rechargeable, cable-free lamp without altering the silhouette that made it a classic.
Freedom from the socket is what makes this lamp so useful in real life. With an IP44 rating it moves happily from bedside table to balcony, from a dinner table centrepiece to a picnic blanket, a particular advantage in compact city apartments where outlets are scarce and furniture has to multitask. The three-stage dimmer lets the same lamp serve as task light at full brightness and as a warm, candle-like presence late in the evening. Charge it during the day and let it wander after dark. Verner Panton designed the Pantop in 1980. Its bell-like shade flares wide and is mounted with the opening facing down, so the light falls where it is needed. Verpan makes it as a Ø23 pendant and table lamp and as cordless Ø18 portables, in many colours.

A late Panton classic
Panton drew the Pantop in 1980, after two decades of bold lamps and furniture. It is quieter than his space-age pieces, built on one confident shape, and has long been a staple of the Verpan collection.
Pendant and table lamp
The Ø23 pendant has a lacquered spun metal shade painted off-white inside, a chrome-plated stem and a 350 cm off-white textile cord. The table lamp sets the same flared shade on a chrome-plated base.
Cordless Pantop
The portable has a built-in LED with a three-stage dimmer and up to seven hours of light per charge. A silicone horseshoe under the base keeps it steady on a table, shelf or garden wall.
Materials
- Lacquered shade
- Spun metal on the pendant, painted off-white inside to reflect the light; injection-moulded plastic on the portable.

- Stem and base; wipe with a soft, dry cloth to keep the shine.
Panton trained as an architect and worked early on in Arne Jacobsen's office. He broke with the wood-and-craft tradition of Danish design, using bold colour and new materials. VERPAN works with Verner Panton Design AG to keep his lamps and furniture in production.
