AJ Wall Lamp

Designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the AJ Wall Lamp has a clean, geometric form and an adjustable shade for versatile light. Part of the iconic AJ family and originally crafted for the hotel, its distinctive design suits both modern and classic interiors.

The SAS Royal Hotel was Jacobsen's total work of art: the Danish architect designed the building together with its furniture, textiles and lighting, and the wall version of the AJ lamp lit the hotel's guest rooms, mounted beside the beds. Its tilted, asymmetric shade echoes the leaning profiles of the Swan and Egg chairs created for the same interiors — a silhouette that has since become one of the most recognisable in Danish design. Louis Poulsen, the Copenhagen lighting house founded in 1874 and Jacobsen's lifelong manufacturing partner, has produced the family ever since.

The AJ Wall still does its original job beautifully: mounted at shoulder height beside the bed, it frees the nightstand entirely and drops adjustable, glare-free reading light exactly where you want it — a trick worth copying in the compact apartments common across Asian cities, where surface space is precious. It is equally at home over a desk, flanking a mirror, or marking a hallway with a graphic accent; the shade tilts to send light down for tasks or along the wall for a softer evening wash.
