Bjørn Wiinblad

Bjørn Wiinblad (1918–2006) drew the same face for sixty years: wide-eyed, flower-crowned, half theatre poster and half folk tale. Trained as an illustrator, he moved into ceramics in the 1940s and went on to work for the stage, for porcelain houses and from his own house and studio north of Copenhagen, always by hand and always in the same unmistakable line.

The Eva series carries his painted faces onto vases and holders such as the Eva Vase H18.5 cm, the Eva Candle holder H14 cm and the Eva Flowerpot on base Ø21 cm. Titania works in the same idiom at smaller scale, while the Lady with hat Vase H50 cm turns the motif into a half-metre sculpture.

Decoration is applied by hand, so no two faces are quite alike; keep painted ceramic out of direct sun, which dulls the colours over years.
