The FJ Elements Pendant is one of Finn Juhl's rare lighting designs, sketched in 1963 by the father of Danish Modern, whose sculptural furniture and United Nations interior introduced Danish design to the world, and relaunched by Louis Poulsen in 2025 including the iconic two-toned grey. The name records Juhl's “elemental” modular construction: simple geometric shades resting lightly on one another, with a diffuser for glare-free downlight and a lower shade that rotates around the upper to redirect the light.
It is at its best where you linger, over a dining table, kitchen island or reading corner: angle the shade to wash a wall and the room feels larger, turn it down for intimate dinners. Compare Danish classics in our PH 5 buying guide or browse all pendant lamps.

Louis Poulsen
Finn Juhl's 1963 lamp, reissued in 2025
DesignerFinn Juhl1912–1989
Finn Juhl sketched this lamp in 1963, one of the few lights the Danish architect ever designed. He described it as built from separate elements, and its shades rotate against each other to turn the light. Louis Poulsen reissued it as FJ Elements in 2025.

Turn the light
Rotate the shades to change where the light falls. The lamp's look changes with it.
Soft light, no glare
A diffuser under the shade softens the downward light, and an opening at the top lets a little light rise.
The original grey
Original Grey is the two-toned colourway of Juhl's design, offered beside matt white and black.
One idea, two lamps
Juhl added what he called a linking element to turn the pendant into a table lamp.

Drawn as elements
The name comes from Juhl's hand sketches, where he described the lamp as composed of elements. The drawings set out its form, proportions and construction, and even outline a whole series of lamps.

Light you can steer
The shades are deep-drawn aluminium with a polycarbonate diffuser. Rotate one shade against the other and the light moves across the table or wall, while the opening at the top casts a soft glow upward.

Pendant and table lamp
The pendant is Ø250 mm and hangs on a 4 m textile cord. The table lamp stands 449 mm high on a die-cast aluminium base, with a 2.8 m textile cord and a switch on the base. Both come in the same three matt colours.
Materials
- Deep-drawn aluminium
- Shades in matt wet-painted white, black or Original Grey.
- Polycarbonate diffuser
- Sits inside the shade and keeps the light glare-free.
- Die-cast aluminium and steel
- Base, stem and lampholder cover of the table lamp, for a stable stand.
Juhl wanted to study art history, but his father pushed him towards architecture. He became known for the Pelican Chair (1940), the Poet Sofa (1941) and the Chieftain Chair (1949). His Trusteeship Council Chamber at the UN in New York helped bring Danish Modern to America.
Using it at home
Which bulb does it take?
The pendant takes one E27 bulb of up to 25 W (E26 in the US). The table lamp takes one E14 bulb of up to 15 W.
How do I change the light direction?
Let the lamp cool, then turn the shades against each other by hand until the light falls where you want it.
How high should I hang the pendant?
About 60–70 cm above a dining table. At Ø25 cm it also works in a row of two or three over a long table or kitchen island.
What cord comes with it?
White and Original Grey come with a white textile cord, Black with a black one. The pendant cord is 4 m, the table lamp cord 2.8 m.
How do I clean it?
Dust the matt painted shades with a soft, dry cloth. A slightly damp cloth removes marks; dry it afterwards.
