The PH 5 pendant is Poul Henningsen's most famous design for Louis Poulsen: a three-shade pendant lamp that delivers 100% glare-free light, with small red and blue inner cones that subtly refine the colour rendering. Named after its 50 cm main shade, it is the definitive dining-table pendant.
Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958 so it would give soft, comfortable light with any bulb, its shade curves derived from his logarithmic spiral, and it has been in continuous production at Louis Poulsen ever since.
Hang it 60–70 cm above a dining table or kitchen island for an intimate island of light. Unsure about size? Our PH 5 buying guide compares the options, or browse more Louis Poulsen classics.
Light source: E27 (E26 compatible), 1 bulb, max 75 W; dimmable with a dimmable bulb. IP20, indoor. Bulb not included, we recommend an E27 LED (9–14 W, 1055–1521 lm), 2700–3000 K.

Louis Poulsen
Glare-free with any bulb since 1958
DesignerPoul Henningsen1894–1967
Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958, when bulbs kept changing shape and size. He shaped it to give soft, glare-free light whatever bulb you fit. It has been in continuous production at Louis Poulsen ever since.

Made for the dining table
The shades send light down onto the table and softly out into the room. You never look into the bulb.
Truer colour
Small red and blue inner cones refine the colour of the light.
In production since 1958
Louis Poulsen has made the PH 5 continuously for more than 65 years.
A colour for every room
21 options, from White classic to Hues, Monochrome and Pastels.

Built on the spiral
Henningsen based the shade curves on the logarithmic spiral. Each shade reflects light before it leaves the lamp. The light on the table is soft, and there is no bright spot to squint at.

White inside
The shades are matt lacquered aluminium with white inner sides. The white surface spreads the light evenly, whichever colour you choose outside.

Size and placement
At 50 cm across and 26.7 cm high, the PH 5 fits most dining tables and kitchen islands. The 3 m cord lets you set the height you want.
Materials
- Matt lacquered aluminium
- Shades with white inner sides for soft, even reflection.
- Rolled aluminium spacers
- Hold the shades in their exact positions.
- Fabric cord
- 3 m long, with canopy included.
Henningsen began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted his life. His PH lamp won gold at the 1925 Paris Exposition. In 1926 he set out the three-shade system that the PH 5 builds on.
Using it at home
How high should I hang it?
60–70 cm above a dining table or kitchen island.
Which bulb should I use?
One E27 bulb (E26 fits too) of up to 75 W. An E27 LED of 9–14 W at 2700–3000 K works well.
Can I dim it?
Yes, with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer.
PH 5 or PH 5 Mini?
The PH 5 at 50 cm suits larger dining tables. The Mini at 30 cm suits smaller tables and compact rooms.
How do I clean it?
Let it cool, then dust the shades with a soft, dry cloth or a soft brush.
