Description

The Anniversary Unikko Tablecloth uses a placement print, so the poppies are composed for the length of the table rather than repeated. Printed in Helsinki with stitched edges, it draws on the pattern Maija Isola created in 1964, when Marimekko's collections held almost no florals and she chose to design an entire range of them.

The cloth is woven from a blend of 57% organic cotton and 43% linen, measures 135 x 250 cm and comes in White / Hay / Sand / Emerald. Wash it before use at the stated temperature, without fabric conditioner, and allow for shrinkage of up to 6%. It arrives in a Marimekko logo-pattern box.

Dress a long dining table for a celebration and add napkins from the Marimekko collection.

Marimekko

Unikko from tea towel to wool throw, since 1964

DesignerMaija Isola1927–2001

Maija Isola drew the Unikko poppy in 1964, and it became Marimekko's emblem of creativity. These textiles carry it at every scale: Pieni Unikko for kitchen pieces, the classic size for tablecloths, Iso Unikko and Piirto Unikko for woven wool throws and cushions.

The flower Ratia didn't want

Armi Ratia thought real flowers could not be printed well, so early Marimekko had almost no florals. Isola drew a whole range anyway. Unikko, the poppy, stuck and has stayed in production ever since.

Kitchen to table

Pot holders, oven mittens and aprons wear Pieni Unikko in organic cotton. Tea towels and napkins mix organic cotton and linen. The tablecloths are unbleached organic cotton sateen in 140 x 140 and 135 x 250 cm.

Woven in the round
03 / 03

Woven in the round

The blankets and throws are jacquard woven or knitted, so the poppy is built into the cloth itself. Iso Unikko uses a recycled wool blend; Piirto Unikko, the drawn 2022 version, uses RWS certified wool.

Materials

Organic cotton sateen
Smooth, slightly lustrous tablecloth cloth; wash at the temperature on the label.
Cotton and linen
Absorbent and quick drying for tea towels and napkins.
Wool and wool blends
Air the throws often and wash them only on a wool programme or by hand.

Isola was spotted by Armi Ratia in 1949 and worked for Printex and Marimekko until 1987. Over those years she drew more than 500 prints, among them Kivet, Lokki, Kaivo and Unikko. She painted freely with a brush, a way of working she called dancing with a brush.

Using it at home

How do I wash the Unikko kitchen textiles?

Wash before first use, with like colours, at the temperature on the care label. Avoid bleach.

The 140 x 140 cm cloth suits square and round tables. The 135 x 250 cm cloth suits longer rectangular tables.

What are the tablecloths made of?

The Unikko tablecloths are unbleached organic cotton sateen, and the Anniversary tablecloth is 57% organic cotton and 43% linen.

How is the Anniversary tablecloth different?

It uses a placement print, so the poppies are composed for the length of the table rather than repeated.
