Galleria: Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi's 1954 stripe
DesignerVuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi1930–2026
Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi designed the Galleria stripe in 1954, early in her years at Marimekko. Stripes run through the house's print history, and while some lasted a season, Galleria has stayed for decades. Here it is woven into organic cotton terry for towels, a bathrobe and slippers.

A lasting stripe
One of the Marimekko stripes that never left the collection.
Heavyweight terry
Organic cotton terry from Portugal, thick and absorbent.
A full bathroom set
Guest towel, hand towel, bathrobe and slippers share the stripe.
Colour in rhythm
A rhythmic stripe that brings colour to a plain bathroom.

Marimekko's stripes
Stripes have carried Marimekko since the 1950s. Some supported other prints, some lasted a season or two. Galleria, Finnish for gallery, is one of the strong ones that stayed and became a lasting classic.

Towels that work
The guest and hand towels are heavyweight organic cotton terry woven in Portugal, with the Marimekko label on the bottom edge. Use the 30 x 50 cm towel for guests and the 50 x 100 cm for hands and face.

Robe and slippers
The bathrobe has long sleeves with wide turn-ups, patch pockets and a separate belt. The slippers are organic cotton terry with rubber soles, in sizes S, M and L, with the Marimekko label on the inside sole.
Materials
- Organic cotton terry
- Towels and slippers; wash before first use and at 60 °C with like colours.
- Cotton robe
- The bathrobe is 100% cotton, cut with wide cuffs and patch pockets.
- No fabric softener
- Softener coats the loops and makes terry less absorbent.
Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi joined Marimekko in 1953 and left in 1960 to found her own brand, Vuokko. She shaped the house's early look with bold stripes and clean-lined clothing, including the 1956 Jokapoika shirt. Her honours include the Lunning Prize in 1964.
