The Iso Piccolo Pillow Case carries the broad brushed stripe that grew out of Piccolo, the pattern Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi painted in 1953, the year she joined Marimekko. Three years later the Jokapoika shirt made from that fabric reached the streets, and the stripe has stayed in the collection ever since.
The case is 200 thread count cotton percale, with 75% organic and 25% recycled cotton, so its colour and surface are naturally lively and small variations appear. It measures 50 x 60 cm in Off-White / Emerald and arrives in a pouch made of the same cloth. Wash before use, separately for the first three washes, with like colours at the stated temperature.
Match it to the Iso Piccolo duvet cover in the Marimekko collection.

Piccolo: the 1953 brushstroke stripe, still at Marimekko
DesignerVuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi
Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi painted the Piccolo stripe freehand in 1953, the year she joined Marimekko. In 1956 it became the Jokapoika shirt, Marimekko's longest-running garment. Here the stripe and its broad Iso Piccolo version cover cushion covers, bedding and a tote bag.

Painted by hand
Vivid brushstrokes give the stripe its loose, hand-painted look.
Stripes that overlap
Where stripes cross, a third colour appears.
Over 70 years in use
Marimekko designers still work with the stripe today.
Sizes for the home
Cushion covers, pillow cases, a duvet cover and a tote.

Painted by hand
Eskolin-Nurmesniemi painted Piccolo freehand. The stripes overlap so the base fabric does not show through, and the overlap creates a third colour. It has stayed in Marimekko's collections since 1953.

From shirt to home
Three years after the stripe was painted, the Jokapoika shirt cut from it reached the shops and the streets. Today the stripe runs across cushions, some printed in two directions, and a cotton tote printed in Helsinki.

Iso Piccolo in bed
Iso Piccolo enlarges the stripe for bedding. The 200 thread count percale is 75% organic and 25% recycled cotton. The duvet cover has hand openings at the top corners, metal buttons at the bottom and double topstitching.
Materials
- Organic cotton canvas
- A sturdy weave for cushion covers and the tote; wash with similar colours.
- Cotton percale
- Crisp, cool bedding in 200 thread count, softening with each wash.
- Cotton and linen blend
- Recycled and organic cotton with linen in one cushion cover, for a dry, textured feel.
Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi worked at Marimekko from 1953 to 1960. She replaced the tight waist of fifties fashion with loose, architectural shapes, often cut with a single seam. Her silhouettes were ahead of their time, and Jokapoika, her 1956 shirt, is still made.
Using it at home
Which cushion pads fit?
Use a 50 x 50 cm pad for the square cover and a 40 x 60 cm pad for the rectangular one.
How do the cushion covers close?
With a zip on one side; on the 50 x 50 cm cover the zip is concealed.
How do I wash it?
Turn it inside out, close the zip, and wash with similar colours at the temperature on the care label.
What is the difference between Piccolo and Iso Piccolo?
Iso Piccolo is a broader version of the same brushed stripe, scaled up for bedding.
Does Piccolo mix with other Marimekko prints?
Yes. A plain stripe sits well beside florals such as Unikko on a bed or sofa.
