The Knitted Bag Large is a generous shoulder bag in a jacquard knit Unikko pattern, made from firm recycled polyester with a ribbed look. It has a wide shoulder strap, a ribbon closure and an embroidered Marimekko logo on the front. Unikko was designed by Maija Isola at a time when florals were rare in Marimekko's collections, and it stands for creativity.
The bag is made of 100% polyester in China and measures 48 x 40 x 10 cm (W x H x D), weighing 0.4 kg. Colour: Black / Off White.

These shoulder bags carry Unikko as a jacquard knit rather than a print, worked in firm recycled polyester with a ribbed texture. Both have a wide shoulder strap and an embroidered Marimekko logo on the front. The smaller bag closes with a zip, the large one with a ribbon.

Pattern in the fabric
The flower is knitted in, so it cannot fade off the surface like a print.

A poppy in yarn
Maija Isola created Unikko when Marimekko's collections had hardly any florals, and went on to draw a whole range of floral prints. On these bags the poppy is built from yarn, knitted in jacquard so the pattern runs through the fabric.
Ribbed and firm
The recycled polyester knit is dense, with a ribbed look that gives the bags texture and structure. It holds its shape well, while staying light enough to carry all day, at well under half a kilo.
Small or large
The shoulder bag, at 27 x 20 x 10 cm, closes with a zip for phone, wallet and keys. The large bag, at 48 x 40 x 10 cm, ties with a ribbon and takes a scarf, a book and the day's shopping.

Maija Isola joined Armi Ratia's company in 1949, before it was even called Marimekko, and designed for it until 1987. In that time she drew more than 500 prints. She painted Unikko in 1964 in defiance of Ratia's rule against florals, and Ratia ended up picking it for the collection.

Is the pattern printed?
No. Unikko is knitted into the fabric as a jacquard.
How does the large bag close?
With a ribbon tie; the smaller shoulder bag closes with a zip.
How do I clean it?
Spot clean with a damp cloth and dry it flat so the knit keeps its shape.
Will it stretch?
The ribbed knit is firm, but avoid overloading it with heavy items.
