The Oiva bowl carries the Unikko print on white stoneware in a useful everyday size. Unikko was born in 1964, when Maija and Kristina Isola set out to create a whole range of floral prints at a time when almost no flowers appeared in Marimekko collections, and the poppy has stood for creativity ever since. Oiva tableware is designed by Sami Ruotsalainen.
Made in Thailand from 100% white stoneware, it holds 5 dl, measures 12.5 cm across and stands 7 cm high. Colourways run from White with Plum, Cranberry and Pink through White with Dark Green, Beige and Light Sand, White with Clay and Rose, plain White, White and Black, and White with Red and Blue. It is dishwasher, oven, microwave and freezer proof.
Use it for cereal, soup or salad, and mix the colourways around a table. Explore more prints in the Marimekko collection.

Unikko on Oiva: the 1964 poppy meets 2009 stoneware
DesignerMaija Isola1927–2001
Oiva is Marimekko's everyday tableware, shaped by Sami Ruotsalainen and launched in 2009. Here it carries Unikko, the poppy Maija Isola drew in 1964. The range covers mugs, cups, bowls, plates, a teapot and jars, plus Unikko plates cut to the outline of the flower.

White stoneware that goes in the dishwasher, oven, microwave and freezer.
Mix and match
Every Oiva shape works with plain white and other Oiva prints.
Plates shaped as poppies
The Unikko plates in stoneware and glass take the flower's petal outline.
From espresso to serving
Sizes run from a 0.5 dl espresso cup to a 1.5 l serving bowl.
Seven words for a shape
Ruotsalainen guided Oiva with seven words: honest, relaxed, natural, practical, durable, modern and grounded. The shapes were meant to stay contemporary for decades and to carry Marimekko's bold prints.
A floral that broke a rule
Armi Ratia believed real flowers could not be printed faithfully, so early Marimekko had almost no florals. Isola drew Unikko anyway, as an abstraction of a flower. It became the house emblem of creativity.
Lay the table freely
Oiva was designed for everyday life, not formal settings. Use the 25 cm plate for dinner, the 20 cm for breakfast, the 5 dl bowl for porridge, and the 4 dl mug for long coffees. Mix printed and plain pieces as you like.
Materials
- White stoneware
- Made in Thailand; dishwasher, oven, microwave and freezer safe.
- Ceramic decal
- The Unikko print is fired onto the glaze, so it holds up to daily washing.
- Maple and cork details
- The teapot handle is maple and the jars close with cork; wash these pieces by hand.
Isola was spotted by Armi Ratia in 1949 and worked for Printex and Marimekko until 1987. Over those years she drew more than 500 prints, among them Kivet, Lokki, Kaivo and Unikko. She painted freely with a brush, a way of working she called dancing with a brush.
Using it at home
Can Oiva / Unikko go in the dishwasher and microwave?
The stoneware cups, mugs, bowls and plates are dishwasher, oven, microwave and freezer safe. Remove the base sticker first, as it contains a little metal.
Can I combine it with other Oiva prints?
Yes. All Oiva shapes share the same lines, so Unikko, plain white and other prints sit together.
Which bowl sizes are there?
2.5 dl (9.5 cm across), 5 dl (12.5 cm) and 9 dl (16.5 cm).
What does each size suit?
The 2.5 dl bowl suits dips and desserts, the 5 dl cereal and soup, and the 9 dl salads or sharing.
What are the bowls made of?
100% white stoneware printed with Unikko.
