The Marimekko Piirto Ketunmarja Cushion Cover is printed in Helsinki with golden pigment, so the cowberry pattern that Aino-Maija Metsola drew in 2018 reads as a fine line drawing across the cloth. A concealed zipper runs along one side.
The cover is made in Estonia from unbleached cotton, of which 25% is organic and 25% recycled, and measures 50 x 50 cm in Off-White / Gold. Unbleached and recycled fibres give the surface a lively character with small areas of differing colour, and it carries an Oeko-Tex certificate. Wash inside out at the temperature given and iron on the reverse.
Use it to warm up a neutral sofa with a little gold, alongside other textiles from the Marimekko collection.

Ketunmarja: Aino-Maija Metsola's 2018 dusk garden
DesignerAino-Maija Metsola
Aino-Maija Metsola drew Ketunmarja, meaning foxberry, for Marimekko in 2018. It shows foxes slipping into a garden at dusk while small birds perch in a yew. The print appears here at small scale as Pieni Ketunmarja and as Piirto Ketunmarja, a fine line drawing in golden pigment.

A story in the print
Foxes, birds and a yew tree at dusk give the pattern a quiet, mysterious mood.
Printed in Helsinki
The fabrics are printed at Marimekko's own factory in Helsinki.
Gold that catches light
Piirto Ketunmarja uses golden metal pigment, so the drawing shifts with the light.
Kitchen and sofa
Oven mitten, pot holder and towel share the print with a cushion cover and fabric.

Foxes in the garden
Ketunmarja is set at dusk. Foxes sneak into a garden, and small birds sit in the branches of a yew. Metsola gives the scene an enchanting, slightly mysterious feel that suits autumn and winter rooms.

Two ways to draw it
Pieni Ketunmarja is the small-scale version for kitchen textiles. Piirto Ketunmarja turns the motif into a fine line drawing printed in golden pigment on unbleached cotton, for cushions and fabric.

Cloth for the kitchen
The oven mitten and pot holder are cotton panama with half the cotton recycled, padded and fitted with a hanging loop. The kitchen towel mixes organic cotton and linen, which dries glasses without leaving lint.
Materials
- Unbleached cotton panama
- Half recycled cotton; unbleached fibres keep the natural tone of the cloth.
- Organic cotton and linen
- 57% organic cotton and 43% linen in the towel, absorbent and lint-free on glass.
- Golden metal pigment
- Used on Piirto pieces; wash inside out and iron on the reverse.
Aino-Maija Metsola is a Helsinki-based illustrator and designer, born in 1983, who graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki. She has worked with Marimekko since 2006, painting in watercolour, ink, markers and gouache. Juhannustaika, Jurmo and the Sääpäiväkirja series are hers.
Using it at home
How do I wash the kitchen textiles?
Wash before first use, with like colours, at the temperature on the care label.
Can the Piirto Ketunmarja cushion cover be washed?
Yes. Turn it inside out, close the zip and use a gentle programme so the golden print lasts.
Does the cushion cover come with an insert?
No. It takes a 50 x 50 cm cushion insert.
How much fabric should I order?
Plan your length in whole pattern repeats of 88 cm so the drawing lines up across panels.
What does Ketunmarja mean?
It means foxberry in Finnish, a nod to the foxes in the print.
