This cotton and linen blend fabric carries the Piirto Unikko pattern, printed in Helsinki, and is sold by the metre. Piirto Unikko is a stylised, airy variation of the beloved floral Maija Isola created in 1964. It nods to minimalism while emphasising the graphic lines of the Unikko pattern.
Woven in Finland from 48% recycled cotton, 31% organic cotton and 21% linen, it has a pattern repeat of 98 cm and the dry handle of a linen blend. It is available in Linen / Cranberry. Follow the washing temperature given, wash with plenty of water, iron on the reverse side and allow for shrinkage of up to 6%.
Order the length you need for curtains, cushions or a tablecloth, and match it with pieces in the Marimekko collection.

Unikko by the metre, printed in Helsinki since 1964
DesignerMaija Isola1927–2001
Maija Isola drew Unikko in 1964, and the poppy is still printed on cloth in Helsinki. These fabrics carry it at every scale: the classic Unikko, Pieni Unikko and Mini Unikko, plus the drawn Piirto Unikko. Choose cotton, linen, cotton linen or wipe-clean acrylic coated cotton.

Every scale
Large poppies for curtains, small ones for cushions and bags.
Four base cloths
Cotton, linen, cotton linen and acrylic coated cotton.
Cut to your project
Ordered by the metre for curtains, upholstery and sewing.

A poppy against the rules
Armi Ratia believed real flowers could not be printed faithfully, so early Marimekko had almost no florals. Isola drew Unikko anyway, as an abstraction of a flower, and painted it with expressive brushwork.

Over a million metres a year
Marimekko's printing factory in Herttoniemi, east Helsinki, prints about a million metres of fabric a year. All of the house's fabrics by the metre are printed there, Unikko among them.

Choose your scale
Classic Unikko, with a 98 cm repeat, suits curtains and large walls. Pieni Unikko, at 88 cm, suits cushions and bags. Mini Unikko, from 2009, works for small sewing projects, and Piirto Unikko shows the poppy as lines.
Materials
- Organic and heavyweight cotton
- Firm enough for curtains, cushions and light upholstery.
- Linen and cotton linen
- Drapes softly and lets light through for airy curtains.
- Acrylic coated cotton
- Wipe with a damp cloth; suits tablecloths, bags and aprons.
Isola was spotted by Armi Ratia in 1949 and worked for Printex and Marimekko until 1987. Over those years she drew more than 500 prints, among them Kivet, Lokki, Kaivo and Unikko. She painted freely with a brush, a way of working she called dancing with a brush.
Using it at home
How much fabric should I order?
Measure your project and round up to whole pattern repeats so the poppies line up across seams and panels.
Should I wash the fabric before sewing?
Wash cotton and linen before cutting to allow for shrinkage. Acrylic coated fabric is wiped clean with a damp cloth instead.
What is the longest piece I can get?
Up to 15 metres in one continuous length.
What is the difference between Pieni and Mini Unikko?
Pieni Unikko is a smaller version of the poppy; Mini Unikko, from 2009, is smaller still.
Which base cloths are available?
The Unikko prints come on organic cotton, heavyweight cotton, unbleached cotton, linen, a cotton linen blend and an acrylic coated cotton, all sold by the metre.
