The Rutsjebane Cotton Fabric is printed in Helsinki for sewing your own curtains, cushions and table linen. Danish textile artist Vibeke Rohland painted it in 2025 for the Marimekko Artist in Residence programme, letting paint loose in organic, overlapping stripes. Rutsjebane is the Danish word for roller coaster.
Printed in Helsinki on 100% organic cotton, the fabric is sold by the metre in Tomato, Petrol, Off-White and Pin, with a pattern repeat of 204 cm. Follow the washing temperature given, wash with like colours and allow for shrinkage of up to 4%.
Run it up as curtains, a tablecloth or a set of cushion covers to carry the print through a room. Explore more prints in the Marimekko collection.

Archive classics
Isola built Kivet (1956) from circles cut with scissors, likely after the rough stones on her atelier grounds. Kaivo (1964) came from watching ripples spread when a bucket dropped into a well. Hennika (1958) is a block stripe by Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi.

From the 2000s
Erja Hirvi's Lumimarja (2004) began with a winter branch hung with berries. Anna Danielsson's Bottna (2002) draws water lily leaves. Aino-Maija Metsola's Juhannustaika (2007) paints midsummer flowers, and her Kuuskajaskari (2012) carries autumn winds.

New in 2025
Danish textile artist Vibeke Rohland painted Rutsjebane in 2025 for Marimekko's Artist in Residence programme. Loose, overlapping stripes give it movement. Rutsjebane is Danish for roller coaster.

Marimekko was founded in Helsinki in 1951 and has always worked with independent print designers. These fabrics bring together Maija Isola, Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, Erja Hirvi, Anna Danielsson, Aino-Maija Metsola and Vibeke Rohland, whose prints are all printed at the house's Helsinki factory.
Using it at home
How much fabric should I order?
Measure the project and round up to whole pattern repeats so the print lines up across panels.
How do I wash these fabrics?
Wash with like colours at the temperature on the care label. Wash before sewing to allow for shrinkage.
Which prints suit curtains?
Large repeats such as Hennika (177 cm) and Juhannustaika (125 cm) show best on wide windows; Kuuskajaskari linen filters light.
Which suit cushions and small projects?
Kivet and Lumimarja, with 62 cm repeats, fit well on cushions, bags and table linen.
Are the fabrics printed in Finland?
Yes. They are printed at Marimekko's factory in Helsinki.
