The Marimekko Unikko Tablecloth is printed in Helsinki with the Unikko poppy, cut long for a dining table and finished along all its edges. Unikko was drawn by Maija ja Kristina Isola in 1964, at a time when almost no floral designs appeared in Marimekko collections; Maija Isola was fascinated by flowers and went on to create a whole range of new floral prints, and the poppy has stood for creativity ever since.
It is made in Estonia from unbleached 100% organic cotton sateen and measures 135 x 250 cm, in Off-White / Cranberry / Rose. The unbleached cloth has a naturally lively colour and surface where small areas of differing colour may appear, and it carries an Oeko-Tex certificate. The cloth arrives in the Marimekko logo pattern box. Wash at the temperature given.
Dress a long table with plain white plates and let the poppies carry the setting, with napkins from the Marimekko collection.

The flower Ratia didn't want
Armi Ratia thought real flowers could not be printed well, so early Marimekko had almost no florals. Isola drew a whole range anyway. Unikko, the poppy, stuck and has stayed in production ever since.
Kitchen to table
Pot holders, oven mittens and aprons wear Pieni Unikko in organic cotton. Tea towels and napkins mix organic cotton and linen. The tablecloths are unbleached organic cotton sateen in 140 x 140 and 135 x 250 cm.
Woven in the round
The blankets and throws are jacquard woven or knitted, so the poppy is built into the cloth itself. Iso Unikko uses a recycled wool blend; Piirto Unikko, the drawn 2022 version, uses RWS certified wool.

Isola was spotted by Armi Ratia in 1949 and worked for Printex and Marimekko until 1987. Over those years she drew more than 500 prints, among them Kivet, Lokki, Kaivo and Unikko. She painted freely with a brush, a way of working she called dancing with a brush.
Using it at home
How do I wash the Unikko kitchen textiles?
Wash before first use, with like colours, at the temperature on the care label. Avoid bleach.
What do Pieni, Iso and Piirto mean?
Pieni means small and Iso means large, referring to the scale of the poppy. Piirto is the line-drawn version from 2022.
Which tablecloth size fits my table?
The 140 x 140 cm cloth suits square and round tables. The 135 x 250 cm cloth suits longer rectangular tables.
What are the tablecloths made of?
