The Iso Unikko Throw is a jacquard-knit blanket in which the oversized poppy is built into the structure of the cloth. Unikko came out of 1964, when Marimekko's collections held almost no florals and Maija Isola chose to design a whole range of them; the flower now represents creativity.
Knitted in Italy from a wool blend of 44% recycled wool, 37% virgin wool, 16% recycled polyamide and 3% other fibres, the throw measures 130 x 170 cm and comes in Off-White / Chestnut. Regular airing is recommended, and brushing helps keep the surface even.
Fold it over the end of a bed or keep it on the sofa for cold evenings, with more textiles in the Marimekko collection.

Marimekko
Unikko from tea towel to wool throw, since 1964
DesignerMaija Isola1927–2001
Maija Isola drew the Unikko poppy in 1964, and it became Marimekko's emblem of creativity. These textiles carry it at every scale: Pieni Unikko for kitchen pieces, the classic size for tablecloths, Iso Unikko and Piirto Unikko for woven wool throws and cushions.

One flower, many scales
Small poppies on pot holders, large blooms on throws, drawn lines on cushions.
Printed in Helsinki
The printed cloths come from Marimekko's own factory in Helsinki.
Natural fibres
Organic cotton sateen, cotton and linen towels, and wool throws.
Two-faced blankets
Jacquard blankets show the pattern in reversed colours on the back.

The flower Ratia didn't want
Armi Ratia thought real flowers could not be printed well, so early Marimekko had almost no florals. Isola drew a whole range anyway. Unikko, the poppy, stuck and has stayed in production ever since.

Kitchen to table
Pot holders, oven mittens and aprons wear Pieni Unikko in organic cotton. Tea towels and napkins mix organic cotton and linen. The tablecloths are unbleached organic cotton sateen in 140 x 140 and 135 x 250 cm.

Woven in the round
The blankets and throws are jacquard woven or knitted, so the poppy is built into the cloth itself. Iso Unikko uses a recycled wool blend; Piirto Unikko, the drawn 2022 version, uses RWS certified wool.
Materials
- Organic cotton sateen
- Smooth, slightly lustrous tablecloth cloth; wash at the temperature on the label.
- Cotton and linen
- Absorbent and quick drying for tea towels and napkins.
- Wool and wool blends
- Air the throws often and wash them only on a wool programme or by hand.
Isola was spotted by Armi Ratia in 1949 and worked for Printex and Marimekko until 1987. Over those years she drew more than 500 prints, among them Kivet, Lokki, Kaivo and Unikko. She painted freely with a brush, a way of working she called dancing with a brush.
Using it at home
How do I wash the Unikko kitchen textiles?
Wash before first use, with like colours, at the temperature on the care label. Avoid bleach.
What do Pieni, Iso and Piirto mean?
Pieni means small and Iso means large, referring to the scale of the poppy. Piirto is the line-drawn version from 2022.
How do I care for the wool throws?
Air them regularly. When needed, wash on a wool programme or by hand in cool water and dry flat.
What are the throws made of?
They range from 100% RWS certified wool and recycled wool blends to wool and organic cotton or 100% organic cotton jacquard knits.
Which size should I choose?
The 130 x 170 and 130 x 180 cm throws suit a sofa or armchair, and the 150 x 220 cm blanket covers a bed.
