The Marimekko Oiva Bowl wears the Piccolo pattern, a 5 dl size that suits porridge, soup and everything in between. Oiva products are designed by Sami Ruotsalainen. Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi created Piccolo in 1953, the year she joined Marimekko, painting the stripes with vivid brushstrokes. Three years later the Jokapoika shirt made from the fabric reached the shops and the streets, and it has stayed there ever since.
The bowl is made of 100% whiteware and is food safe as well as dishwasher, oven, microwave and freezer proof. It holds 5 dl and comes in White / Black. Remove the sticker from the base before use, as it contains a small amount of metal. Made in Thailand.
Stack a few together and pair them with the matching Oiva mugs from the Marimekko collection for a relaxed everyday table.

Piccolo on Oiva: the 1953 brushstroke stripe
DesignerVuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi1930–2026
Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi painted the Piccolo stripe in 1953, the year she joined Marimekko. Three years later the Jokapoika shirt cut from it reached the shops and the streets. Here the brushed stripe runs across Oiva stoneware, the everyday shapes designed by Sami Ruotsalainen.

A hand-painted stripe
Vivid brushstrokes give each band a lively edge.
A piece of history
The stripe of Marimekko's longest-produced garment.
Daily stoneware
Oiva shapes made for everyday use.
Easy to combine
Stripes sit well with plain white Oiva and floral prints.

Painted with a brush
Piccolo was painted with vivid brushstrokes. On the cloth the stripes overlap, so the base fabric does not show through and the overlap creates a third colour. Each band keeps the loose edge of the brush.

The Jokapoika shirt
In 1956 the unisex Jokapoika shirt, cut from Piccolo fabric, reached the shops and the streets. It is Marimekko's longest continuously produced garment, and the stripe still looks fresh on a breakfast table.

Five everyday pieces
The range has two mugs, 2.5 and 4 dl, a 5 dl bowl for porridge and soup, a 20 cm plate and a 15 x 12 cm plate for bread and butter. All share the relaxed Oiva lines and stack with other Oiva.
Materials
- Whiteware
- Made in Thailand; dense and durable for daily use.
- Ceramic decal
- The stripe is fired onto the glaze, so it lasts through washing.
- Oiva shapes
- The same sizes as all Oiva, so pieces stack and combine.
Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi joined Marimekko in 1953 and left in 1960 to found her own brand, Vuokko. She shaped the house's early look with bold stripes and clean-lined clothing, including the 1956 Jokapoika shirt. Her honours include the Lunning Prize in 1964.
Using it at home
Can Oiva go in the dishwasher, oven and microwave?
The stoneware plates, bowls and mugs are dishwasher, oven, microwave and freezer safe. Remove the base sticker first, as it contains a little metal.
Can I combine Piccolo with other Oiva?

What is Jokapoika?
A unisex striped shirt from 1956 made from Piccolo fabric, still in Marimekko's collection.
How much does the bowl hold?
5 dl, suited to porridge, soup and everything in between.
Who designed the shape?
Sami Ruotsalainen designed the Oiva shapes; Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi painted the Piccolo stripe in 1953.
