The Marimekko Oiva Teapot was designed by Sami Ruotsalainen, and pairs a plain white stoneware body, strainer and lid with a wooden handle and a wooden knob, so the shape carries the design rather than a print.
Made in Thailand from 100% white stoneware with maple wood parts, it holds 7 dl, is food safe and comes in White. Wash it by hand only, do not use it on a hob or cooktop, and do not soak the wooden parts. Wiping the wood with a wood oil or vegetable oil, leaving it 30 minutes and removing the excess, keeps it in good condition.
Use it with the printed Oiva cups from the Marimekko collection.

Oiva: Sami Ruotsalainen's 2009 everyday stoneware
DesignerSami Ruotsalainen
Oiva is the tableware shape Sami Ruotsalainen designed for Marimekko, launched in 2009. Plain white pieces carry the design through form alone, and the same shapes take seasonal prints such as Erja Hirvi's Kukasta kukkaan and Aino-Maija Metsola's Piirto Ketunmarja.

Thoughtful details
The teapot has a maple handle and the Koppa dish a removable leather handle.

Seven words
Ruotsalainen guided Oiva with seven words: honest, relaxed, natural, practical, durable, modern and grounded. Marimekko asked for pieces that would stay contemporary for a long time and stand up to its bold prints.

No correct way to lay a table
Oiva was designed for everyday home life. Ruotsalainen says there is no correct way to set a table, so plates, bowls and mugs mix freely across sizes, colours and prints. Plain white pieces tie a varied table together.

Brown clay, dotted glaze
Some pieces use brown stoneware. The Kukasta kukkaan plate carries Hirvi's 2024 floral as a decal, and the Koppa serving dish has a multicoloured dotted glaze and a leather handle that lifts off for washing.
Materials
- White and brown stoneware
- Made in Thailand; dense, durable and food safe.
- Maple wood
- On the teapot handle and lid knob; wash by hand and do not soak.
- Leather handle
- On the Koppa dish; remove it before the dish goes in water.
Sami Ruotsalainen took a master's degree in ceramic and glass design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 2005. He designed the Maku series for Arabia and the Oiva shapes for Marimekko, with Marimekko's print designers adding the decoration. He now works in Marimekko's design team.
Using it at home
How do I care for the Oiva teapot?
Wash it by hand, do not use it on a hob, and do not soak the maple parts.
Do plain and printed Oiva pieces match?
Yes. All Oiva pieces share the same shapes and sizes, so plain white and printed pieces stack and combine.
How much does the teapot hold?
It holds 7 dl, enough for about three cups of tea.
What is it made of?
White stoneware with maple wood parts; it weighs 1.34 kg.
Can I put it in the dishwasher?
No. The maple parts mean it should be washed by hand.
