Description

The Marimekko Piirto Unikko Bedspread is a double bedspread in organic cotton with the pattern worked as a jacquard knit. It is two sided, one face on a light background and the other on a darker one. Piirto Unikko is a stylised, airy variation on the floral Maija Isola created in 1964, nodding to minimalism while drawing out the graphic lines of the original.

Made of 100% cotton in Portugal, it measures 260 x 260 cm and comes in White and Off-White. Wash it separately at the temperature given, and expect shrinkage of up to 5%.

Spread it over bedding from the Marimekko collection.

Marimekko

Unikko, the 1964 poppy, for bed and bath

DesignerMaija Isola1927–2001

Maija Isola painted Unikko in 1964, at a time when Marimekko's founder Armi Ratia kept florals out of the collections. The poppy has stood for creativity ever since. Here it covers duvet covers and pillow cases, organic cotton towels, bathrobes, a bath mat and a shower curtain.

  1. The original poppy

An abstraction of a flower, not a likeness, and a symbol of joy.

  2. Bedding in three weaves

Crisp percale, smooth sateen or a cotton and linen blend.

  3. Towels in three textures

Printed terry, embossed Solid and debossed Piirto Unikko.

  4. Easy to combine

Big Unikko, Pieni and Mini Unikko mix on one bed or in one bathroom.

A flower against the rules

When Isola drew Unikko, Marimekko's collections were made up almost entirely of abstract prints. She answered with a whole range of florals. Unikko was the one that stayed, and it is still in production today.

The percale is 200 thread count, 75% organic and 25% recycled cotton, crisp and cool to sleep in. The sateen is 220 thread count organic cotton with a soft sheen. A 50% cotton, 50% linen blend gives a more textured feel.

Most towels are organic cotton terry made in Portugal. Printed Unikko carries the colour. Unikko Solid has the pattern embossed into the pile, and Piirto Unikko, an airy line version, is debossed into heavyweight terry.

Materials

Cotton percale
A tight plain weave that feels crisp and cool; it softens with every wash.
Organic cotton terry
Absorbent loops for towels, robes and slippers; wash before first use.
Organic cotton sateen
A satin weave with a smooth, quietly lustrous face.

Maija Isola was hired by Armi Ratia in 1949 to design for Printex, the company that became Marimekko. Over almost four decades she created more than 500 prints. Her daughter Kristina Isola joined Marimekko at 18, and from 1980 to 1987 the two designed patterns together.

Using it at home

How do I wash it?

Follow the temperature on the care label and wash with similar colours. Wash new towels and bedding once before first use.

Which bedspread size fits my bed?

The 260 x 260 cm bedspreads cover a double bed, and the 160 x 260 cm bedspread suits a single bed.

What are the bedspreads made of?

The quilted Unikko bedspreads are organic cotton over recycled polyester padding; the Piirto Unikko bedspread is an organic cotton jacquard knit.

Can I use either side?

Yes. The bedspreads are two sided, with the pattern on both faces.

What does the quilting do?

It gives the surface a soft relief and keeps the padding evenly spread across the cover.
