Description

The Tiiliskivi Runner carries the brick pattern as a woven structure, with the edges finished and sewn onto the back so the strip lies flat. Armi Ratia designed Tiiliskivi in 1952, taking the ordinary brick as her motif and making it one of Marimekko's quietest, most durable graphics.

It is woven in Lithuania from a blend of 63% organic cotton and 37% linen, measures 42 x 140 cm and comes in Chestnut / Off-White. Wash at the stated temperature and allow for shrinkage of up to 8%.

Run it down the centre of a dining table, or use it on a sideboard under a group of candle holders from the Marimekko collection.

Marimekko

Armi Ratia's 1952 brick, woven, knitted and printed

DesignerArmi Ratia1912–1979

Tiiliskivi, Finnish for brick, was drawn in 1952 by Marimekko's founder Armi Ratia. It reflects her belief in the simple beauty of everyday life. Here the brick grid is woven into linen, embossed into organic terry, knitted as jacquard and printed on cotton in Helsinki.

One of the oldest designs in the house, by Armi Ratia herself.

  2. Built into the cloth

On towels, linen and the bedspread the bricks are woven or knitted, not printed.

  3. Two sides, two looks

Terry towels and the jacquard bedspread show different colours on each face.

  4. A whole home

Bedding, bath, kitchen and table textiles plus fabric by the metre.

The beauty of a brick

Ratia took the most ordinary building block as her motif. The plain grid of Tiiliskivi carries her belief that everyday things deserve good design, and it sits easily beside bolder Marimekko prints.

Bath towels and the bathrobe are organic cotton terry from Portugal with the bricks embossed in relief. The bedspread is a jacquard knit in organic cotton, light on dark on one side and dark on light on the other.

Linen for the table

Linen for the table

The kitchen towel is woven in Lithuania from 100% linen. The runner and placemats mix organic cotton and linen, with edges turned and sewn to the back so they lie flat on the table.

Materials

Armi Ratia was born in Pälkjärvi in Karelia and founded Marimekko in Helsinki in 1951 with her husband Viljo Ratia. She is one of Finland's most famous female entrepreneurs. In 1949 she spotted the young Maija Isola, and she shaped the house's bold, everyday approach to print.

Using it at home

Is the pattern printed or woven?

Both. Towels, linen, runner, placemats and bedspread are woven or knitted; bedding, cushion cover and fabrics are printed.

What is the runner made of?

It is woven from 63% organic cotton and 37% linen, so the brick pattern sits in the structure of the cloth.

How long is the runner?

It measures 42 x 140 cm, which runs down the centre of a typical dining table.

Will the runner lie flat?

Yes. Its edges are finished and sewn onto the back so the strip lies flat on the table.

Who designed the Tiiliskivi pattern?

Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, designed Tiiliskivi in 1952, taking the ordinary brick as her motif.
