The Unikko Bath Mat is tufted and cut to the outline of the poppy, so the flower becomes the shape of the mat. Because the surface is tufted and the shape hand-cut, every mat looks slightly different. Unikko was created in 1964 by Maija Isola, whose range of florals gave Marimekko its emblem of creativity.
Made in India from 100% organic cotton terry with a non-slip backing, it measures 73 x 74 cm and comes in Hay / Sand / Emerald, Emerald / Off-White / Mole, Plum / Pink / Toffee, Sage / Off-White / Dark Blue and Charcoal / Off-White. Wash it separately in a wash net with like colours and dry flat away from direct heat; the non-slip finish weakens with washing.
Lay it beside the bath with towels from the Marimekko collection.

Marimekko
Unikko, the 1964 poppy, for bed and bath
DesignerMaija Isola1927–2001
Maija Isola painted Unikko in 1964, at a time when Marimekko's founder Armi Ratia kept florals out of the collections. The poppy has stood for creativity ever since. Here it covers duvet covers and pillow cases, organic cotton towels, bathrobes, a bath mat and a shower curtain.

The original poppy
An abstraction of a flower, not a likeness, and a symbol of joy.
Bedding in three weaves
Crisp percale, smooth sateen or a cotton and linen blend.
Towels in three textures
Printed terry, embossed Solid and debossed Piirto Unikko.
Easy to combine
Big Unikko, Pieni and Mini Unikko mix on one bed or in one bathroom.

A flower against the rules
When Isola drew Unikko, Marimekko's collections were made up almost entirely of abstract prints. She answered with a whole range of florals. Unikko was the one that stayed, and it is still in production today.

Three weaves for bed
The percale is 200 thread count, 75% organic and 25% recycled cotton, crisp and cool to sleep in. The sateen is 220 thread count organic cotton with a soft sheen. A 50% cotton, 50% linen blend gives a more textured feel.

In the bathroom
Most towels are organic cotton terry made in Portugal. Printed Unikko carries the colour. Unikko Solid has the pattern embossed into the pile, and Piirto Unikko, an airy line version, is debossed into heavyweight terry.
Materials
- Cotton percale
- A tight plain weave that feels crisp and cool; it softens with every wash.
- Organic cotton terry
- Absorbent loops for towels, robes and slippers; wash before first use.
- Organic cotton sateen
- A satin weave with a smooth, quietly lustrous face.
Maija Isola was hired by Armi Ratia in 1949 to design for Printex, the company that became Marimekko. Over almost four decades she created more than 500 prints. Her daughter Kristina Isola joined Marimekko at 18, and from 1980 to 1987 the two designed patterns together.
Using it at home
How do I wash it?
Follow the temperature on the care label and wash with similar colours. Wash new towels and bedding once before first use.
What is the bath mat made of?
It is 100% organic cotton terry with a non-slip backing to hold it in place on the floor.
How big is the bath mat?
It measures 73 x 74 cm and is cut to the outline of the poppy.
Why does my mat look slightly different from the photo?
The surface is tufted and the shape is hand-cut, so every mat varies a little.
Who designed Unikko?
Maija Isola created the Unikko poppy in 1964.
