The Marimekko Unikko Tealight Holder is shaped as the Unikko flower and made of whiteware. It marks the 60th anniversary of the pattern and carries the embossed anniversary stamp on its base, arriving in the Unikko 60th anniversary box. Maija Isola drew Unikko in 1964, when Marimekko's collections were still dominated by abstract prints, shaping it as an abstraction of a flower rather than a likeness of one, and the poppy has stood for creativity ever since.
It is made of 100% whiteware in Thailand and comes in White. Washing it by hand is recommended.
Light it among candle holders from the Marimekko collection.

Marimekko
The 1964 Unikko poppy in wax, cork and stoneware
DesignerMaija Isola1927–2001
Maija Isola drew Unikko in 1964, defying Armi Ratia's dislike of floral prints. These small objects turn the poppy into a shape you can hold: a hand-cast candle, cork placemats cut to the flower's outline, relief stoneware for the bathroom and dated collectible ornaments.

The poppy as a shape
Candle, placemat and tealight holder take the outline of the flower itself.
Dated for collectors
Collectible ornaments are stamped underneath with the Marimekko mark and the year.
Recycled stoneware
The bathroom pieces are made in Portugal from Ecogres, 90% recycled ceramics.
Small, easy gifts
The ornaments and candle holder arrive in a Marimekko gift box.

A flower against the rules
Armi Ratia felt real flowers could not be captured in print, so Marimekko had almost no florals. Isola answered in 1964 with a whole range of them. Unikko, the poppy, became the house emblem of creativity.

Cast, cut and pressed
The candle is hand-cast in paraffin wax in Portugal, so each one varies slightly. The placemat is cut from cork to the poppy's outline. The bathroom beaker and soap dish carry the flower in relief.

Piirto Unikko in gold
Piirto Unikko, drawn in 2022, reduces the poppy to airy graphic lines. On the candle holder and the collectible ornament it appears as a golden decal on a pink glaze, a quieter way to bring the flower into a room.
Materials
- Paraffin wax
- Burn on a heat-proof surface, away from draughts, and never leave a lit candle unattended.
- Stoneware and Ecogres
- Glazed or relief stoneware; wipe or rinse with mild soapy water.
- Cork
- Light and heat-insulating under plates; wipe with a damp cloth and let it air dry.
Isola was spotted by Armi Ratia in 1949 and worked for Printex and Marimekko until 1987. Over those years she drew more than 500 prints, among them Kivet, Lokki, Kaivo and Unikko. She painted freely with a brush, a way of working she called dancing with a brush.
