Two sizes of the same 1969 sphere, and the choice is rarely settled by looks alone. The VP Globe Pendant Ø40 and the Ø50 share a construction, a silhouette and a way of hiding the light source, but they differ in diameter, in weight and in the sort of ceiling that will carry them comfortably. This is how the two compare, in polished aluminium and in opal glass.
One sphere, two reading distances
Verner Panton drew the VP Globe in 1969, in the space age chapter of his career that also produced the Visiona interiors. The construction is identical at every size: an acrylic outer top and bottom shell, reflectors suspended in steel chains, and a canopy made from chrome plated metal. Nothing is tucked away behind a shade. You look into this lamp rather than at it, and the optical mechanism is the ornament.
The reflectors do the real work. They sit between your eye and the source, catching light on their curved surfaces and returning it upwards and downwards as a soft wash, so the source itself stays out of view from a seated or a standing position. That is why a VP Globe can hang low over a table without becoming uncomfortable to sit under, and it is also why diameter changes the character of the lamp and not only its footprint. A larger sphere leaves more air around the reflectors, and the layered composition stays legible from across a room.

A third size, Ø28, exists in the family, so the Ø40 sits in the middle of the range and the Ø50 is the largest of the three. Both of the sizes covered here are made with polished aluminium reflectors or with opal glass ones, at the same weights.
What 5 kg and 9 kg ask of the ceiling
The VP Globe Pendant Ø40 weighs 5 kg. The VP Globe Pendant Ø50 weighs 9 kg, close to double, and that figure matters more than the ten centimetres of diameter between them. Five kilograms is the sort of load an ordinary ceiling point in a flat takes without drama. Nine kilograms wants a fixing into a joist or a load rated anchor, decided before the sphere arrives rather than while somebody is holding it overhead.
Ceiling height counts twice over. A VP Globe is designed to be seen from underneath and from the side, so it needs enough drop to sit in the room rather than press against the plaster. In a flat with standard ceilings, the Ø40 is the size that reads as sculpture without eating the headroom, which is why it recurs in our notes on designer lighting for small apartments. Give the Ø50 a stairwell, a double height entrance or a room where the eye can travel, and its extra volume turns into presence instead of obstruction.
Diameter against the width of your table
Over a dining table, the useful comparison is the sphere against the tabletop. A Ø40 globe keeps a comfortable margin of free surface on a table roughly 80–90 cm wide, and it centres well over a round table of a similar diameter. The Ø50 needs a wider board, something nearer 100 cm across or a generous round table, or it begins to crowd the plates and to block sightlines between people sitting opposite one another.
Length of the table changes the answer again. Over a long refectory style table, two Ø40 spheres hung in line often read better than one Ø50 in the middle, because the rhythm of two smaller globes follows the table rather than competing with it. Panton designed the VP Globe to work alone or in clusters, and that instruction is worth taking literally: a pair at matching heights, or three staggered in a stairwell, reads as one composition.
Polished aluminium or opal glass
The reflector material is the second decision, and it is the one that alters the light. In the aluminium versions, the polished discs carry the signature red and blue lacquered accents and bounce light off their surfaces, so the globe glints and the colour flickers as you move around it. The VP Globe Pendant Opal Glass Ø40 and the VP Globe Pendant Opal Glass Ø50 replace those metal discs with five opal white glass reflectors, hung on steel chains inside the same clear acrylic sphere.
Light then passes through the reflectors instead of rebounding off them. Each disc glows from within, the effect closer to a group of small moons held in a bubble than to a metal chandelier, and the result is even and free of glare. Choose opal glass for a bedroom, a calm dining room or any scheme where the sphere should be quiet; choose polished aluminium where you want the graphic snap of Panton's colour and a livelier play of reflections. Weights and sizes do not change between the two: 5 kg at Ø40, 9 kg at Ø50, whichever reflector you pick.

If you are still undecided, work backwards from the room. Measure the drop you can spare, check what the ceiling can hold, then set the sphere against the width of the surface it will hang over. The Ø40 is the flexible answer for most homes, the Ø50 the one to take when the room has volume to fill.
