Fun Pendant 1DM

The Fun 1DM by Verner Panton features a three-ring chrome frame with cascading seashell discs. Designed in 1964, it offers a warm, elegant glow and remains a timeless design classic.

Verner Panton (1926–1998) trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and began his career in Arne Jacobsen's studio before setting off in a radically different direction from the teak-and-restraint mainstream of Danish modernism. The Fun series, created in 1964, captures his playful, experimental side: hundreds of hand-cut mother-of-pearl discs hang from a chromed metal frame, so the lamp behaves less like a fixed object and more like a living surface. When lit, the nacre shells glow with a soft, warm iridescence, and the slightest movement of air sets them gently swaying with a delicate chime. Today the series is produced by VERPAN, the Danish company dedicated to keeping Panton's lighting designs in authentic production.

With its three tiers of shells, the Fun 1DM is a natural choice above a dining table, where the discs catch and scatter light across the room at eye level. It is also a forgiving pendant for compact homes: the open shell construction keeps it visually light despite its presence, so it works in the smaller dining areas and open-plan layouts typical of city apartments. Hang it low — around 60–70 cm above the tabletop — to enjoy the shimmer up close, and pair it with warm-toned bulbs to bring out the pearl's natural lustre.
