SF 28 Bauhaus Table Lamp

Developed in 1928 by a Swedish functionalist group and akin to Gispen's Dutch designs, the SF 28 rests a polished-aluminium cap loosely on an opal-glass sphere for easy angle adjustment and glare-free light. TECNOLUMEN preserves this friction-based system — versatile Bauhaus simplicity. Each lamp is numbered and marked for authenticity.

The SF 28 captures a quieter side of late-1920s functionalism. Where many lamps of the era chased adjustability through joints and hinges, this design solved the same problem with almost nothing: a metal cap resting on a glass sphere, held in place by friction alone, tilted by hand in a second. The opal glass was equally deliberate — diffusing the bulb into a soft, even glow at a time when bare electric light was still harsh and new. The reference to Willem Gispen, the Dutch designer whose Giso lamps made opal glass a functionalist signature, places the SF 28 in a genuinely international movement that ran parallel to the Bauhaus workshops. TECNOLUMEN of Bremen, the company entrusted with re-editions of Bauhaus-era lighting since 1980, produces it with the same friction system, and numbers and marks each example for authenticity. Because the opal sphere glows softly in every direction, the SF 28 works as a mood-setter rather than a task light — perfect on a bedside table, a hallway console or a living-room shelf where you want pools of calm light in the evening. Tilt the aluminium cap to bounce a little extra brightness toward a book or keep it level for a pure, lantern-like glow.
