The VL 45 Radiohus Portable Lamp carries one of Vilhelm Lauritzen's most loved designs beyond the wall socket. Created in the 1940s for Radiohuset, the Danish Broadcasting House in Copenhagen, the original VL 45 pairs softly swelling mouth-blown opal glass with warm brass, here reissued by Louis Poulsen as a cordless lamp with an aged-brass frame and a genuine leather strap.
With no cord to manage, this portable lamp moves wherever the evening goes: dinner table, balcony, bedside or windowsill, where its glass diffuses a soft, glare-free pool of light. Browse more portable lamps or explore the Louis Poulsen collection.

Louis Poulsen
Lauritzen's 1940s lamp for Danish radio's house
DesignerVilhelm Lauritzen1894–1984
Vilhelm Lauritzen designed the VL 45 in the 1940s for Radiohuset, the Danish Broadcasting House in Copenhagen. First known as the Office Lamp, it pairs mouth-blown opal glass with brass. Louis Poulsen makes it as a pendant in two sizes and as a cordless portable.
- Years Radiohuset was built
- 1936–41
- Layers of mouth-blown glass in the pendant shade
- 3
- mm, the portable and small pendant
- Ø 175
- mm, the large pendant
- Ø 250
Glass that glows
The layered opal glass is glossy outside and spreads a soft, even light when lit.
Brass that ages
The pendant's brushed brass is left untreated, so it gains a natural patina over the years.
A portable version
The cordless VL 45 has an aged brass frame and a leather strap, and works indoors and out.
A design with a past
Photos from the 1950s show the VL 45 above the Eames Lounge Chair in the Eameses' Los Angeles home.

Made for one building
Lauritzen designed Radiohuset as a total work of art, from its studios down to the lamps. The VL 45 began there as a working light for offices, which is why it was first called the Office Lamp.

Glass and brass
The shade is mouth-blown, so each one varies slightly. On the pendant, the brass fitting is untreated and darkens with time. On the portable, the brass is aged and lacquered to keep its finish.

Where it works
The Ø 175 pendant suits a hallway, a kitchen counter or a row over a table. The Ø 250 lights a dining table. The portable moves from bedside to terrace with no cord to plan around.
Materials
- Mouth-blown opal glass
- Gives the soft glow; wipe it with a damp cloth when the lamp is cool.
- Untreated brass
- On the pendant, it develops a patina; dust it with a dry cloth and avoid polish if you like the aged look.
- Leather strap
- On the portable, the strap makes the lamp easy to carry and hang.
Lauritzen was a Danish architect and a leading figure of Danish functionalism. His buildings include Radiohuset (1936–41), Kastrup Airport (1937–39), Folkets Hus (1953–56) and the Danish embassy in Washington DC (1958–60). His studio designed lighting for its buildings with Louis Poulsen.
Using it at home
Which size suits a dining table?
The Ø 250 pendant suits most dining tables. Two or three Ø 175 pendants in a row work over a long table or kitchen island.
Will the brass change colour?
On the pendant, yes. The brass is untreated and slowly darkens to a patina. The portable's aged brass is lacquered.
Can the portable go outside?
Yes, it is made for indoor and outdoor use. Charge it indoors with the USB-C cable.
Can I dim it?
The portable dims by touch. The pendant dims with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer.
How do I clean the glass?
Let it cool, then wipe it with a soft, lightly damp cloth and dry it.
