The Rumee 220 Portable Lamp, designed by Gabriel Tan for Louis Poulsen, takes its sculptural cue from the wavy curves of a broad-brimmed hat, and its name from a blend of Danish and English: “rum” (room) plus “me”, echoing “roomie”. True to the company's glare-free philosophy forged with Poul Henningsen, it delivers a soft, downward-directed glow that flatters faces and surfaces, so a board game, bedtime story or quiet drink happens in light that feels considered.

Gabriel Tan designed the Rumee for Louis Poulsen after the wavy curves of a broad-brimmed hat. The name blends the Danish rum, meaning room, with the English me, and sounds like roomie. It earned Tan the title of Louis Poulsen's first Designer of the Year in 2025.

Reading light and glow
The tilted shade sends a wide, glare-free beam down and to the side, while a 360° ambient glow fills the space around it.
Easy to carry
Its sculpted body is comfortable to hold, so it moves easily from room to room or outside.

Rated IP44, it suits a terrace table or a balcony evening as well as a bedside.

A lamp to share a home with
Tan wanted a companion lamp, like a roommate. He keeps a Rumee by his bed for reading and bedtime stories, and takes it with him early in the morning so the light does not wake anyone.
Asymmetry from nature
Asymmetry and natural forms run through Tan's work. The Rumee's uneven, sculpted top invites you to pick it up, and the diffuser beneath keeps the light soft and glare-free at close range.
Size and charging
It measures 220 x 243 x 223 mm and weighs 1.8 kg. It charges over a 1.5 m USB-C cable, a white light on the base shows it is charging, and the switch sits on the base. The adapter is not included.

Tan was training as a navy combat officer in Singapore when design books in a library changed his path. He graduated in industrial design from the National University of Singapore in 2007, founded Gabriel Tan Studio in 2016 and opened a branch in Porto in 2020.

Can I use it outdoors?
Yes. It is rated IP44, so it handles splashes on a terrace or balcony. Bring it inside to charge.
How do I dim it?
It has three steps, 10%, 33% and 100%, set with the switch on the base.
Which charger do I need?
A standard USB-C power adapter. The lamp comes with a USB-C cable but no adapter.
Can the battery be replaced?
Yes. The Li-Ion 18650 battery is rechargeable and replaceable.
