Originally designed in 1966, the PH 4/3 pendant reflects Poul Henningsen's pursuit of perfect, glare-free light, building on the three-shade system he developed in the 1920s. It simplifies a 1929 design that won global acclaim; the shade's white interior gives even, comfortable illumination — a timeless classic.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) spent four decades refining the three-shade System PH he had introduced with Louis Poulsen in 1926, the year after his Paris lamp won gold at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs. The PH 4/3, from 1966, is one of the last designs of his lifetime: it distils a celebrated 1929 model into a cleaner, all-metal form while keeping the system's optical core — shades placed on a logarithmic spiral with the bulb at the focal point, so light is reflected downward at a constant angle and the source never meets the eye. The white-painted interior of the shades acts as the reflector, producing the even, comfortable light the PH family is known for.
With its all-metal shades sending light cleanly downward, the PH 4/3 excels above dining tables and kitchen counters — hang it around 50–60 cm above the surface for a generous pool of glare-free light. Its mid-size 40 cm top shade suits both standard dining tables and wider desks, and the classic white finish lets it slip quietly into almost any interior, from pale Nordic rooms to compact city apartments where one well-chosen pendant must do a lot of work.
