The PH 4/3 Pendant, designed in 1966, is one of the last designs of Poul Henningsen's lifetime, a distillation of a celebrated 1929 model into a cleaner, all-metal form. The optical core of the system he introduced with Louis Poulsen in 1926 remains intact: shades placed on a logarithmic spiral with the bulb at the focal point, reflecting light downward at a constant angle so the source never meets the eye. The white-painted interior acts as the reflector, giving the even, comfortable light the PH family is known for.

Louis Poulsen launched the PH 4/3 in 1966, one of the last designs of Poul Henningsen's life. It simplifies a PH light from 1929 that won top honours at the Barcelona world exhibition into a clean, all-metal form. A 40 cm top shade sits over 3/3 lower shades in white lacquered aluminium.

Light and simple

A late distillation
In 1929 Henningsen's lighting won top honours at the Barcelona world exhibition. Nearly four decades later he reduced that idea to the PH 4/3, launched in 1966, the year before his death.
The spiral at work
Each shade sits on a logarithmic spiral with the bulb at its centre. Light strikes the whole curve at a constant angle and is reflected down and out, so the source stays hidden from anyone at the table.

Hang the pendant over a dining table or a desk, where its 40 cm shades spread a wide pool of light. The table lamp, 54 cm tall, suits a sideboard, a large desk or a living-room corner.

Henningsen was a Danish architect, writer and designer who began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted until his death in 1967. His lamp for the 1925 Paris Exposition won gold, and in 1925–26 he set out the three-shade system behind the whole PH collection.
