Louis Poulsen

Louis Poulsen has been making lighting in Copenhagen since 1874, guided by a question its designers keep returning to: how should light fall on people and surfaces? From Poul Henningsen onwards the answer has usually been layered shades that hide the source and reflect a warm, glare-free light downwards.

Henningsen's three-shade system is clearest in the PH 5 Pendant Lamp of 1958 and the PH 80 Table Lamp. Verner Panton's dome of 1971 lives on in the Panthella 160 Portable Lamp V3, and Vilhelm Lauritzen's fixtures for Copenhagen's Radio House return in the VL 45 Radiohus Portable Lamp. The Patera pendant represents the contemporary side of the catalogue.

Several of the classics now exist as rechargeable portables, so a shape first drawn for a ceiling in the 1950s can be carried to a garden table: the same optics, a fraction of the size.
