Marimekko
Armi Ratia's 1952 brick, woven, knitted and printed
DesignerArmi Ratia1912–1979
Tiiliskivi, Finnish for brick, was drawn in 1952 by Marimekko's founder Armi Ratia. It reflects her belief in the simple beauty of everyday life. Here the brick grid is woven into linen, embossed into organic terry, knitted as jacquard and printed on cotton in Helsinki.

Drawn by the founder
One of the oldest designs in the house, by Armi Ratia herself.
Built into the cloth
On towels, linen and the bedspread the bricks are woven or knitted, not printed.
Two sides, two looks
Terry towels and the jacquard bedspread show different colours on each face.
A whole home
Bedding, bath, kitchen and table textiles plus fabric by the metre.

The beauty of a brick
Ratia took the most ordinary building block as her motif. The plain grid of Tiiliskivi carries her belief that everyday things deserve good design, and it sits easily beside bolder Marimekko prints.

Felt as much as seen
Bath towels and the bathrobe are organic cotton terry from Portugal with the bricks embossed in relief. The bedspread is a jacquard knit in organic cotton, light on dark on one side and dark on light on the other.

Linen for the table
The kitchen towel is woven in Lithuania from 100% linen. The runner and placemats mix organic cotton and linen, with edges turned and sewn to the back so they lie flat on the table.
Materials
- Organic cotton terry
- Embossed and two-toned; wash before first use and skip fabric softener to keep it absorbent.
- Linen
- Strong and quick drying, and it softens with every wash.
- Organic and recycled cotton
- 75% organic and 25% recycled cotton in the 200 TC bedding.
Armi Ratia was born in Pälkjärvi in Karelia and founded Marimekko in Helsinki in 1951 with her husband Viljo Ratia. She is one of Finland's most famous female entrepreneurs. In 1949 she spotted the young Maija Isola, and she shaped the house's bold, everyday approach to print.
