Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Royal in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen — his total work of art, where tower, furniture, textiles and lighting formed one composition alongside the Swan and Egg chairs. Where the other AJ lamps are angular, the Royal explores the circle: a shallow dome whose ridged top lets a gentle light exude upwards while the interior spreads generous light below. Louis Poulsen re-engineered it around a built-in LED with a frosted diffuser for 100% glare-free light, adding the smaller size in 2020.
