The PH 4½-4 Pendant, introduced in 1980, is a specialist within Poul Henningsen's three-shade family: a 45 cm top shade over a deeper set of lower shades, conceived for fixtures that hang low over a surface. Like every lamp in the system Henningsen developed with Louis Poulsen in 1925–26, its curves are derived from the logarithmic spiral, so light is caught at a uniform angle and the bulb stays hidden even when the pendant sits close to eye level. The shades are mouth-blown, three-layer opal glass, white inside, glossy outside, gently luminous throughout.
That makes it one of the family's best choices hung low over a dining table or kitchen island, 60–70 cm above the surface: a defined pool of light for the meal, a soft glow for the room. Compare sizes in our pendant lamp collection or read the PH pendant buying guide.

Louis Poulsen
Henningsen's large PH pendants for big rooms
DesignerPoul Henningsen1894–1967
These are the large members of Poul Henningsen's PH family: the PH 5/5, the PH 4½-4 and the four-shade PH 5-4½ and PH 6½-6. All follow the logarithmic-spiral geometry he worked out with Louis Poulsen in 1925–26, scaled for large tables, high ceilings and open spaces.
- Top shade of the PH 5/5
- 50 cm
- Year Henningsen launched the four-shade system
- 1931
- PH 6½-6 adapted for Charlottenborg, Copenhagen
- 1979
- Diameter of the PH 6½-6
- 65 cm
Glare-free at scale
The shades are larger, but the principle is the same: you see lit surfaces, never the bulb.
Light down and out
The four-shade models send more light sideways onto walls, shelves and faces.
High or low
The PH 5/5 is a whole size for higher hanging; the PH 4½-4 is a hybrid made to hang lower.
Built for big spaces
They suit long dining tables, stairwells, lobbies, galleries and rooms with high ceilings.

Whole sizes and hybrids
Henningsen's numbers describe the shades. The PH 5/5 has a 50 cm top shade with lower shades in a 3:2:1 proportion. The PH 4½-4 pairs a 45 cm top shade with the lower shades of the 4/4, so it can hang lower.

The four-shade system
In 1931 Henningsen launched a four-shade system as a high-mounted alternative to the chandelier. In 1979 architects Sophus Frandsen and Ebbe Christensen adapted it for Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, adding a small blue shade to cut glare.

Concert hall and gallery
In 1984 the smaller PH 5-4½ was made for the Aarhus Concert Hall. Its matt white shades give even, comfortable light, which suits museums, exhibition rooms and high-ceilinged homes.
Materials
- Painted aluminium shades
- Matt white or soft-touch black outside with white inner sides for even reflection.
- Mouth-blown opal glass
- Used on glass versions; the shades glow while sending light downward.
- Frosted diffuser
- Included with the PH 5/5 for an even softer light; dust it when you clean the shades.
Henningsen was a Danish architect, writer and designer who began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted until his death in 1967. His lamp for the 1925 Paris Exposition won gold, and in 1925–26 he set out the three-shade system behind the whole PH collection.
Using it at home
Which model suits a dining table?
The PH 4½-4 is a hybrid made to hang lower over a table. The PH 5/5 suits larger tables and higher hanging.
Which suits a high ceiling?
The four-shade PH 5-4½ and PH 6½-6 were made for large, high rooms such as galleries and concert halls.
What does the blue shade do?
On the four-shade models, the small blue shade added in 1979 reduces glare from below.
Can I dim it?
Yes, with a dimmable bulb and dimmer, or on LED versions with phase, DALI or Bluetooth control where offered.
How do I clean it?
Let it cool and dust the shades with a soft, dry cloth or brush. Wipe glass shades with a lightly damp cloth.
