NJP Table vs Mini vs Floor vs Wall: Which to Choose

Louis Poulsen lists the NJP as four separate lamps, and on screen they look almost identical: the same arm, the same chimney head, the same small switch. What actually separates them is reach, weight and what the lamp stands on or fastens to. This guide puts the measurements of the table, Mini, floor and wall versions side by side.

What all four NJP lamps share

Oki Sato of the Tokyo studio nendo designed the NJP for Louis Poulsen as a rereading of the twentieth century architect lamp, the working light built around visible springs and jointed arms. The table, floor and wall versions arrived in 2015; the Mini followed in 2022. Sato kept the honest mechanics of the type, then changed the one part the LED made possible: the head is shaped like a chimney, so it vents heat from the diode and at the same time bounces a thin measure of light back down the arm. In a dark room the lamp quietly lights its own structure rather than sitting as a black outline.

Every version carries a built in LED of 10 W with a switch on the head, a 4 or 8 hour timer and an IP20 indoor rating. The driver sits outside the lamp, on the cord with its plug, which keeps the head slim and cool enough to aim by hand. Materials are shared too: steel in the foot and base, aluminium through the arms, head and anodised LED housing, in black, white and light aluminium grey.

NJP Table Lamp: the full size desk light

The NJP Table Lamp measures 220 mm wide, 480 mm high and 480 mm long, which is the reach of a lamp meant to sit beside a keyboard and still throw light across an A3 sheet. Its weight depends entirely on how you fix it: 11.3 kg with the steel base, and 2.7 to 2.9 kg for the clamp and pin versions, which borrow their stability from the furniture instead. Four mountings are listed, base, clamp, pin in the 40 mm diameter and pin in the 10 mm diameter, so the same lamp can sit on a desk, grip its edge or drop into a fitted hole in a worktop.

The cord runs 2 m, and the light source is offered in 2700 K or 3000 K, the first warmer and closer to evening light, the second slightly crisper in a room with a lot of white. The shade angle adjusts, which matters: with the head high and tilted forward, the shielded LED puts a wide pool on the desk and keeps the diode out of your sightline through a long evening.

NJP Mini Table Lamp: less footprint, more colour

The NJP Mini Table Lamp is 160 mm wide, 415 mm high and 160 mm long, and weighs 6.4 kg. The important number there is the 160 mm square plan. A bedside table that cannot take the 220 mm span of the larger lamp will usually take the Mini, and on a shared desk it leaves the surface almost clear. Nothing mechanical was lost in the reduction: two flexible joints, an arm that rotates 342 degrees around the base, and a head that both tilts and rotates.

The Mini is also the only version with a dimmer. Its push button fades the light on and off, dims steplessly from a low fifteen per cent up to full output and remembers the level you last set, alongside the same 4 or 8 hour timer. The cord is 2.5 m of PVC, the base is powder coated steel, and the light source is single temperature at 2700 K. It comes in seven colours rather than three: brown rose, black, white, light aluminium grey, soft pink, taupe and petrol blue. Those muted tones are why the Mini reads as furniture in a bedroom while the larger lamp still reads as equipment. NJP Floor Lamp: reading height beside a chair

The NJP Floor Lamp stands 1250 mm high, 260 mm wide and 560 mm long, and weighs 15.8 kg. Height is the whole argument for it. The head sits above a seated reader's shoulder, so light arrives over the top of the page with the diode out of view, and 560 mm of reach lets the arm cross an armrest or a headboard while using no surface at all. Beside a bed it replaces a bedside lamp and leaves the nightstand empty.

The cord is shorter than the table version at 1.7 m, which is worth checking against the distance from your chair to a socket. Colours follow the series, and the light source is 2700 K or 3000 K depending on version, with the same head switch and 4 or 8 hour auto off.

NJP Wall Lamp: nothing on the surface at all

The NJP Wall Lamp comes in two lengths. The short arm is 150 mm wide, 200 mm high and 300 mm long at 1.7 kg, or 2.3 kg in the hardwired build. The long arm is 150 mm wide, 600 mm high and 600 mm long at 3.4 kg, or 3.7 kg hardwired. Choose by how far the light has to travel: the short arm suits a wall close behind a pillow or directly over a desk, while the long arm reaches out over a bed or a reading chair set away from the wall.

Three cable configurations are listed: cord without a wall box, a wall box without cord, and both together. Corded versions use 2.3 to 3.3 m of plastic cord with an external driver, while hardwired versions take an adapter built into the wall box, tidier if the wiring can be planned in advance. One limit to note: the NJP Wall cannot be mounted on a ceiling.

Comparing the four and choosing one

Work backwards from the surface. If the lamp has a desk of its own and will be moved between tasks, the table version with its steel base is the one that stays put; if the desk is fitted or the edge is clear, the clamp and pin mountings remove the base from the surface entirely and take several kilograms with it. If the surface is a bedside table or a small desk shared with other things, the Mini is the only version that fits in 160 mm and the only one that dims, which is the feature you will use most in a bedroom.

If there is no surface worth giving up, go vertical. The floor lamp wants 560 mm of clear reach and a socket within 1.7 m, and it earns that space by lighting a chair properly. The wall lamp trades portability for a fixture that folds back out of the way, and the long arm is the one to specify when the furniture sits away from the wall.
