AJ Garden Bollard

The AJ family, created by Arne Jacobsen in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, is widely regarded as his finest work. The AJ Garden Bollard extends these principles outdoors, drawing on the proportions of the AJ Mini Table and the tilt of the AJ Floor Lamp. Paired with the AJ 50 Wall, it brings Jacobsen's iconic look to gardens and pathways.

The SAS Royal Hotel was Jacobsen's total work of art — the Danish architect designed the building together with its furniture, textiles and lighting, and the angled AJ shade became one of the most recognisable silhouettes in Danish design. The bollard is a later, LED-era continuation of that language by Louis Poulsen, the Copenhagen lighting house founded in 1874 and Jacobsen's original manufacturing partner: the same graphic, asymmetric head, re-engineered with a built-in LED and weather-sealed construction so the family's geometry can live outside year-round.

In the garden, the bollard's tilted shade throws light forward and down — onto the path, not into the eyes — which makes it ideal for marking walkways, doorsteps and parking edges with calm, glare-free pools of light. A row of two or three creates a quiet rhythm along a front path, while a single bollard beside a terrace or entrance court reads as sculpture by day.
