The Enigma Pendant, introduced by Louis Poulsen in 2003, is Shoichi Uchiyama's chandelier reduced to its essence: concentric acrylic shades that appear to hover in mid-air on wires so fine they nearly disappear, so light itself becomes the visible structure. Each shade is positioned to soften glare and guide the glow downward, Japanese elegance meeting Scandinavian light-shaping, with a matt black version added in 2018.
Because the Enigma occupies so little visual space, it rewards rooms where a conventional chandelier would overwhelm: over a dining table in an open-plan home, above a stairwell, or hung slightly low so the layered shades read at eye level. Shoichi Uchiyama designed the Enigma for Louis Poulsen in 2003, rethinking the chandelier as thin concentric shades held on near-invisible wires. From a distance the shades seem to float in the air, which gave the lamp its name: Enigma means mystery.

Light without glare
Matt acrylic shades send the light down and spread soft reflections up and to the sides. No bright bulb is visible from any angle.
Shades that seem to float
Ultra-thin stainless steel wires hold each shade, so from across the room the lamp reads as rings of light.
Two colourways
Brushed aluminium with white shades, or black wet-painted aluminium with black shades.
For tables and entrances
It suits entryways, hallways and living areas, and hangs well above dining tables, kitchen bars and islands.
A chandelier taken apart
Uchiyama broke the classic chandelier down into slim layers of concentric circles. The Enigma 425 came first in 2003, the larger 825 followed in 2005 and the 545 in 2007, all built on the same idea of floating shades.
Matt above, shiny below
Each acrylic shade has a matt upper surface that diffuses the light and a shiny lower surface that reflects it. The result is soft, comfortable light that falls evenly on the table or floor below.
White or black
The original pairs brushed aluminium with white acrylic shades. In 2018 a black version joined it, with black wet-painted aluminium and black shades. Uchiyama saw it working well in subdued or white rooms.

- Stainless steel wires
- Ultra-thin wires hold every shade in place and create the floating look.
- Lacquered aluminium
- Used for the cone and pendant tube, brushed aluminium coloured or black wet-painted.
Born and raised in Tokyo, Uchiyama founded Shoichi Uchiyama Design Office in 1977 to create luminaires with glare-free, indirect light. He tests each design with full-scale mock-ups and real light sources. His work has won the iF Award in Germany and the Good Design Award in Japan.
Using it at home
Which bulb does it take?
The Ø425 takes one GU10 bulb of up to 20 W and the Ø545 one GU10 bulb of up to 40 W. The Ø825 has an integrated 3000 K LED.
How is it hung?
The Ø425 and Ø545 hang on a 3 m cord and the Ø825 on a 4 m cord and wire. A canopy is included.
Which size should I choose?
The Ø425 (74 cm high) suits a dining table or entrance. The Ø545 (97 cm) suits larger tables, and the Ø825 (155 cm) large rooms with high ceilings.
Where does it work best?
Above dining tables, kitchen bars and islands, and in entryways, hallways and living areas.
How do I clean it?
Switch it off and let it cool, then dust the shades with a soft, dry cloth or brush. Avoid solvents on the acrylic.
