This heavyweight Marimekko cotton carries Lokki, one of the house's most recognisable prints, printed in Helsinki and sold by the metre. Maija Isola drew Lokki, meaning seagull, in 1961 after watching sunlight fall on a drawn curtain, where the wide folds cast wavelike shadows. She cut the final sketch from coloured paper, which gave the waves their living lines.
The fabric is 100% organic cotton in a heavyweight quality, with a 114 cm pattern repeat, and comes in White / Black. Wash with like colours, follow the washing temperature given and allow for shrinkage of up to 4%. Made in Finland.
Hang it as a curtain so the printed waves fall into real folds, and add cushions from the Marimekko collection.

Lokki: Maija Isola's 1961 wave from a sunlit curtain
DesignerMaija Isola1927–2001
Maija Isola drew Lokki, Finnish for seagull, in 1961. Looking at a curtain drawn across a sunny window, she saw its folds cast wavy shadows and realised that a fabric printed with waves looks richly draped even in a small piece. Here it covers bedding and fabric.

A wave of light
The print captures shadows of sunlight in the folds of a curtain.
Soft from the start
The cotton is washed before sale for a soft, lived-in feel.
Easy to change
Duvet covers have hand openings at the top corners.
Calm for the bedroom
Broad waves give a quiet, even surface across a whole bed.

Shadows on a curtain
Isola noticed sunlight throwing wavy shadows through a drawn curtain. The idea was simple: print waves, and even flat cloth looks gathered. She cut the final sketch from coloured paper, which gave the lines their life.

Washed organic cotton
The bedding is organic cotton, washed for a soft finish and made in Turkey. Duvet covers have hand openings at the top corners, which make changing the bed easier. The cotton is 150 to 200 TC depending on the piece.

Sizes for the bed
Duvet covers come in 135/140 x 200, 150 x 210 and 240 x 220 cm. Pillow cases come in 50 x 60, 50 x 75 and 63 x 63/65 x 65 cm. Heavyweight cotton fabric lets you sew curtains to match.

Isola was spotted by Armi Ratia in 1949 and worked for Printex and Marimekko until 1987. Over those years she drew more than 500 prints, among them Kivet, Lokki, Kaivo and Unikko. She painted freely with a brush, a way of working she called dancing with a brush.
Using it at home
Do I need to iron it?
No. The washed cotton has a soft, relaxed finish; smooth it while damp if you like it crisp.
Is there a matching fabric?

What is the pattern repeat?
Lokki has a repeat of 114 cm, so plan lengths in whole repeats to line up the waves.

What is it made of?
Heavyweight 100% organic cotton, printed in Helsinki and sold by the metre.
