The PH 3/2 Pendant is one of the most versatile pendant lamps in Poul Henningsen's three-shade family: a 28.5 cm top shade with smaller lower shades in mouth-blown white opal glass, calculated so the bulb is never seen, only warm, even light.
The design descends directly from Henningsen's gold-medal Paris lamp of 1925 and the three-shade system he refined with Louis Poulsen in 1926; the compact 3/2 combination was conceived for lower hanging heights.
Hang it around 60 cm above a two-person dining table, a kitchen island end or a reading corner. Our PH 5 buying guide explains the family's size logic, or browse all pendant lamps.
Light source: E27 (E26 compatible), 1 bulb, max 75 W. IP20, indoor. Bulb not included, we recommend an E27 LED (5.6–9 W, 806 lm).

Louis Poulsen
Henningsen's hybrid made to hang low over a table
DesignerPoul Henningsen1894–1967
The PH 3/2 combines a top shade of about 30 cm with the lower shades of the smaller 2/2 model. Poul Henningsen made these hybrid sizes so his lamps could hang lower, over a table or desk. The shades are mouth-blown opal glass, shaped on his 1926 logarithmic spiral.

Made to hang low
The smaller lower shades keep the light glare-free even close to the table.
Even, soft light
Every shade sits on a logarithmic spiral, which spreads light evenly and softens shadows.
Pendant, table or wall
The same shade set comes as pendants, table lamps and a wall lamp.
Glass or coloured glass
White opal is the classic; pale rose and amber editions add warmth.

Reading the numbers
Henningsen's names describe the shades. In the PH 3/2, the 3 means a top shade of about 30 cm, and the 2 means it uses the lower shades of the 2/2 model. The mix lets the lamp hang lower without glare.

From metal to glass
Early PH shades were metal with painted undersides in white, gold or silver. Glass came later. Today each shade is mouth-blown, so its thickness and texture vary slightly from lamp to lamp.

Where it fits
Hang the pendant over a dining table or kitchen island. Put the table lamp on a sideboard or desk. The wall lamp brings the same light to places with no ceiling outlet. Pale rose, amber and aged brass versions add warmth.
Materials
- Mouth-blown opal glass
- Glossy outside and sandblasted underneath for even light; wipe with a damp cloth.
- Coloured glass editions
- Pale rose and amber shades are blown in four layers with white sandblasted undersides.
- Brass or chrome fittings
- Untreated brass darkens with time; lacquered and chrome finishes keep their look.
Henningsen was a Danish architect, writer and designer who began working with Louis Poulsen in 1924, a partnership that lasted until his death in 1967. His lamp for the 1925 Paris Exposition won gold, and in 1925–26 he set out the three-shade system behind the whole PH collection.
Using it at home
How high should I hang the pendant?
About 60–70 cm above a dining table. The hybrid shades are designed for this lower height.
PH 3/2 or PH 3/3?
The PH 3/2 is made to hang low over a table. The PH 3/3 is a whole size that stays glare-free when hung higher in a room.
Can I dim it?
Yes, with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer.
Will brass versions change?
Untreated brass slowly develops a patina. Aged brass that is lacquered keeps its finish.
How do I clean it?
Let it cool. Wipe the glass with a soft, damp cloth and dust the metal with a dry cloth.
